Prologue: A Double Surprise

[So glad I am finally able to post this story on Wattpad! Hope everyone enjoys this story! Also, I apologize for the relatively short chapters, I will try to make longer ones in the future.]

Two SkyWings lay waiting in the dead of night. Water dripped in the background of the rundown black-stone building that they were in. They were forced to hide in this wretched place because of their family heritage.

Sear looked down her snout at the large ginger-and-apricot-orange egg. She had come from a family of thugs and criminal lords, whereas Arson came from a long line of assassins. Their parents had arranged their marriage so that their families would bind.

She glanced over to Arson who was impatiently tapping his claws on the dark floor.

"The egg was due to hatch tonight, right?" he rumbled impatiently. Sear flicked her tail.

"If that SandWing doctor is to be trusted.." she answered, stamping her foot on the ground as well. Arson growled faintly. Sear knew he never trusted any dragons other then SkyWings, but Dr. Conda was from Possibility, which meant she didn't recognize them as the wanted dragons they were.

"Well, I-" she was cut off by loud crack that sounded from their egg. Both Sear and Arson turned toward it eagerly.

"Finally.." he growled. Sear rolled her eyes, snorting, and continued to observe their egg. There was a crack near the top of the shell where a tiny, ginger snout was vaguely visible in the faint starlight that filtered through the holes and cracks in the ceiling and walls.

There was another splintering crack from the egg, and soon an entire head had poked out.

"He's hatched," Sear commented. Arson's only reply was an uninterested grunt.

The tiny dragonet scrambled the rest of the way out and flopped onto the cold, bare, black-stone floor. He squeaked, looking at his parents briefly before turning to a large partiality-bioluminescent beetle that seemed to want to attack him and angrily squashed it. The beetle quickly started to sizzle, and the dragonet pulled his talon back with puzzlement. Sear's eyes widened.

"He- he is a Firescales.." she stammered in disbelief.

"But that means.." Arson started, as Sear padded over to the egg and fished out a miserable-looking pale red and orange dragonet from the egg. She set the other dragonet by his healthier brother.

"Twins..." they both muttered , gazing at their two sons before them: one a brilliant dark ginger with too much fire, and one a pale reddish-orange with no fire.                                                               Flint and RedRunner.
