Chapter 8

No More

Mother nature's Island – 1st person (Hunter)

I had watched as Robin faded, I had watched as the Tree disintegrated, I had watched as Jackie was stabbed and I had watched as Katie was knocked unconscious. But no more. No more would I stand aside and watch my family fall as I stood on the sidelines. No more would I watch as people hurt and break my family.

But, I was not like Katie, who could magic up great fireballs and launch them at the enemy. I wasn't Robin either, who could entangle people in writhing roots and shoot them full of arrows at a distance. And I wasn't Jackie either. As the Spirit of Winter, she was probably the most powerful of us all. She had full control of her powers, could conjure and use an assortment of weapons and freeze everything and anything, and could heal herself and others. She was also the most dangerous of us, her immense power could easily wipe out everything on the planet if she wasn't careful.

Which is why I couldn't let James get to her. But, I have never been the one to jump straight into violence, always trying to find some way to talk them out of it before I tried to kill them. So when Jackie froze his feet in place I took my chance, lowered my weapons and opened my mouth to talk to him.

"James, give up now, while you still have the chance. We don't need to fight. If you surrender now, we can help you. We will forgive you of your crimes. And we will help you control your powers." I pleaded. James just laughed, like I had just said the funniest thing in the world.

"You talk about 'we' as if all of your little siblings were ok and alive. But if you look around, you notice, there really is no one and no 'we'." He replied smugly. As soon as he finished he started trying to rip his feet out of the ice, but to no avail, his feet weren't going anywhere. I knew I had a bit of time then. I closed my eyes and with my power, I touched into the energy of the plants surrounding me and took it. I drained their energy until they were almost dormant like I usually did in Autumn. The others had often asked how I changed the leaves like I did, but I never told them, because I didn't want them to fear me, I didn't want them to be afraid to come near me in case I drew on their energy.

When I opened my eyes James had successfully removed one foot from the ice and was now frantically clawing and tugging at the other. I knew I was no match for him on my own, even with all the extra energy. With a shaky sigh, I closed my eyes again, but this time I went toward the brighter glow of power. I could hear Katie gasp when I made the connection, but I ignored it. This time, instead of taking her energy, I took some of her power. Katie's power, besides her usual fireball and hot day, was the weather. She made those summer storms and 40°C days. And now I had that power.

Opening my eyes again I summoned the clouds, telling them to bring the storm and let loose. And so they did, the clouds, grey and black and purple, were bulging with rain. Thunder growled in the distance. Without the moon and stars, it was almost pitch black. I could just see the outline of James as he stopped struggling and looked up at me. I raised my hands and brought them together with a small slap. Instantly the rain came pouring down and lightning shot down at the island and surrounding sea.

Taking control of the lightning, I shot one hand into the air and brought it down just as fast, pointing it at James. The lightening followed my finger, flashing brightly in the dark landscape. But instead of hitting James, it hit an Ibex. As it fell I looked down and saw James commanding more animals to protect him.

They launched themselves at me and I struck them down with lightening in quick succession. But they keep coming more and more, faster than my hands can rise and fall, faster than the lightning can flash and fall to the Earth. They surround me, the lightning giving me flashes of the snarling, drooling animals. When darkness crept back I could see their eyes glowing in the dark. The smell of rain, wet dog and burning skin filled my nose and the sound of the yips, chirps, growls and snorts envelope me and besiege my ears. The leather handles of my daggers were soaked and slippery with rain and my clothes clung to my small frame. My shaking hands swept my hair out of my blinking eyes, terror evident in the depths.

I was outnumbered and out-powered and my fear was getting the better of me. But then I remembered what Jackie had told me, Robin and Katie, whenever we got scared:

"F.E.A.R. has two meanings:

Forget Everything And Run

Or

Face Everything And Rise.

The choice is yours."

And with that, she would run at whatever was scaring the soul out of us.

And so with that phrase running through my head, I once again elevated my daggers, clashing them together. Instantly, lightning came down and struck the two weapons, the power rolling through my body as I quickly absorbed it. I brought my daggers down on the animal closest to me and watched as I dropped to the ground smoking, its body twitching from the electricity still flowing through its body.

As if some invisible entity had flipped a switch, they all throw themselves at me. I dance around them, my knives whirling like the wind, my arms flying this way and that, as I skip from one animal to the next, not even waiting for it to die before I had killed the next. I did not grow tired, the energy from the lightning pulsing through my body.

When, without warning, I was hit from behind, and thrown into the jaws of a Sabre. It bit down on my torso, its teeth piercing my skin and I could hear my ribs groan. I gasped and automatically brought my hand up and stabbed it in between the eyes. It fell to the ground with me still stuck in its jaws. I pulled myself free, ripping my shirt in the process, my breath fogging in the air before me.

The extinct animals once again encircled me, the falling snow getting caught in their fur coats. Snow... Only Jackie can make snow. But she's unconscious... Unless- I broke off my chain of thought and whipped my head around, searching for a gap in the writhing mass of bodies.

As I spun in a circle, a ripple passed through the animals and they calmed and retreated, giving me a clear view of Katie, Jackie, and James.

Katie was still lying on the ground, a circle of snow surrounding her prone form. The falling snow melted as soon as it came within a metre of her, her high body temperature keeping her warm.

Jackie, on the other hand, was covered in snow, her white hair and skin blending in with it. The only thing that stood out against the backdrop of white was James. His dark skin, hair, eyes and clothes were a stark contrast to the blinding white coating the island.

And once again, I watched, doing nothing, as he took something I loved and disappeared.
