Chapter 9

I felt cold. I'd never felt cold before. My heart beat laboriously in my ears. My breaths rattled in my chest, each breath becoming shallower. I knew I was going to die, there was no stopping that. But the others...

At that slow thought I tried to peer through the darkness, tried to feel my power. In the distance, I heard the rumble and crash of lightning and flashes of light reached my eyes. I could feel presences standing in my snow. Someone whirling around, surrounded by four-legged beings. And another walking toward the circle of melted snow. Melted snow... Only one person can melt my snow...

Everything was starting to come back to me, and the sound of lightning came closer and closer, and as it flashed I opened my eyes...

James approached the strewn body of my sister. Hunter danced between hundreds of animals, pure lightning leaping off his body and daggers. Katie lay still, but her eyes flittered back and forth underneath her eyelids as if she were having a bad dream.

"No..." I gasped. James rolled Katie's body over, the tip of his rapier biting into her shoulder as he pushed.

"Not..." I struggled, the wind and snow whipping around me, pushing against my body.

"My..." I gasped in pain as the wind picked me up.

"FAMILY!" I roared, drawing up all the energy I never use, all the energy I never wanted to use, and released it.

It stormed into James, wind circling around him and pulling him into the air with me. Ice piercing and slicing. Snow covering and choking. I felt a flow of even more energy and knew it was Hunter's powers. He never told me of his energy powers, but he was my brother and I noticed in battle when he fed us energy, when my ice began harder, when Robin's vines grew thicker, and Katie's fire blazed brighter. And when he seemed drained, and when plants suddenly wilted, his wary eyes making sure we didn't notice.

Ice crawled across his body, creeping through his blood and organs. Sealing his bones in place, freezing his muscles, coating his skin, until he seemed a statue. The ice continued creeping through his body though, clawing slowly but surely to his heart. It struggled frantically, beating quickly, trying to stop the spread of my ice. But I was too much, too strong. With a final crack, the ice sealed over and I let go of the power and the statue fell, smashing to pieces against the frozen ground. I dropped too, my energy spent and the world fading. I smiled in peace; my family was safe again, it may be broken but it was safe. And even if my body wasn't in the material plane, my soul would still protect them, and bring the world snow and cold and a fresh start.
