Sam (Sick at school)

It was 7AM and I'd been awake for the past 2 hours, unable to sleep. My head spun and my stomach was doing flips. I stood up slowly and the world spun around me. I ran to the bathroom and quickly threw up last nights dinner before wandering down to the kitchen.

"Sam! You're awake, your dad and I were just heading out," my mom exclaimed. 'Oh yeahhh' I remembered, they have a business trip. Of course my mom has to leave when I feel horrible.

"Eric has work today but if you need anything call him. If you need us urgently then call but we might not answer. I love you and I'll see you in four days"

I gave her a hug and trudged up the stairs to get ready. I heard the door slam and they were gone.

When I was ready I walked into the bathroom. You could vaguely see the paleness on my skin but other than that you couldn't tell that I was sick. I had a test today and I didn't want my parents to worry.

I stumbled out of the house and to the car where Eric waited.

"You look horrible bro, go back inside. Are you sick?" He asked right as I sat down.

"I'm not sick! I'm fine, please let's just go." I whined and sat back in my seat. After a few minutes Eric reluctantly drove to my school.

"I know you're 'not sick' but if you do feel bad go to the nurse and have them call me. I'll come get you here at the same spot after school." He waved and drove off quickly in order to not be late to work.

I entered the building and slowly made my way to first period.

Keith, my best friend, continued checking in on me all day. Begging me to go to the nurse.

The whole day went by slowly and was tiring. By the time sixth period rolled around I felt like I was about to die. My head ached and I was freezing but hot at the same time. My whole body hurt and I could barely keep my head up. Anyone with a pulse could most likely tell something was off. I want surprised when Keith  again asked if I was feeling better.

"Sam, can you answer number 4?" I nodded and reread it a few times.

"7?" My teacher said I was correct and moved on.

When we began working on our next assignment, I stumbled up to her desk. "Can I go to the nurse?" I asked trying to be polite.

"What for?"

"I feel sick," I sighed as the room began to spin again.

"Okay, let me call and then I'll send you down," she dialed the number and talked for a minute before letting me go.

"Keith, will you escort Sam to the nurse?" I rolled my eyes and he nodded.

The hall spun as we walked. I tripped and clutched onto Keith's arm. "You good?" I nodded slowly.

"Yeah..." Everything spun as the floor moved closer and closer to my face. Then everything turned to darkness.

"Yep, he's right here," I heard a voice say...Keith?

"Hmmm," I groaned louder then I intended.

"Hey, you're awake, we're going to take you to the nurses office and then call your parents." The nurse kindly explained.

"Can't call them...out of town...call my brother, Eric." My words were sort of slurred and jumbled but I think she understood. "What's going on?" I asked, confusion lingering.

"You're sick, you passed out on your way to the nurses office. Luckily Keith was here or you might've injured yourself. We need to head over to my office so I can take your temperature," she paused, "I'm nurse Selena."

Nurse Selena and Keith helped me to the nurses office where I was sat on a cot while they called Eric.

After about 10 minutes Eric entered the office, signed me out, and came into the nurses office.

"Ready?" I groaned slightly and sat up, the room spinning from nausea. Eric guided me to the car and drove back to the house.

When I got out of the car the room began spinning again, quite fast. I fell into the closed car door, gripping it tightly. "I think I'm gonna—" and just as I thought, bile rose in my throat, causing me to vomit everywhere.

"Sam, please let me carry you inside..." Eric insisted.

"I'm f-fine," I mumbled trying to go up the steps. My knees buckled again and I fell to the ground.

Eric came up from behind and carried me inside. "Fine," he mocked rolling his eyes.

"I'm going to take your temperature and get you a bucket." Eric announced after setting me up on the couch. "102°, if it gets too high, I'm going to have to take you to the hospital," he sighed and handed me the bucket then sat in the living room chair.

I had been vomiting every 30-40 minutes and was covered in it. Eric helped me to the bathroom and ran a bath for me. I quickly washed up, put on clothes. and tried to get back to the couch. When I stood up I immediately felt out of breath. Within seconds I had blacked out again, with a loud thud I landed on the floor. I felt my head ricochet off of something. This time no one was there to catch me as the world faded away.

"Sam...SAM, are you okay?" I heard Eric panic, shaking me awake.

My head was throbbing, I felt weird. "What's going on?" I tired to sit up but Eric held me down gently.

"Don't sit up. You passed out again, you're bleeding though. I think you hit your head on the stair when you fell. I called an ambulance and they're in the way." Eric took my temperature again, "103.5°, that's probably why you passed out..."he trailed off, thinking to himself.

"E-Eric, what happened?" I asked again I couldn't seem to remember what was going on.

"You hit your head buddy," he said and I sat there for a minute. My body felt tingly and my head was still throbbing.

"What?" I panicked for a minute. Where am I? Why can't I remember anything? Why does everything hurt? "What...what...what...what...what..." my body ached. Tears formed in my eyes.

"It's okay Sam, the ambulance is almost here. They're gonna get you fixed up." Eric reassured. I was so tired, the pain was almost unbearable.

"Hello?" A voice called, the paramedic?

"In here!" Eric yelled back.

Whilst Eric explained things to one, another looked me over.

"Hi, my name is Jesse, I'll be looking you over. My partner over there, she's talking to your brother, her name is Alexa." He smiled softly. "Can you tell me your name?" He asked kindly.

I stared blankly at him. "My name...I-I don't k-know," I felt tears glaze over my eyes.

"That's okay, can you tell me where we are right now?"

I looked at him again "What...what happened?" I asked confusion lacing my words.

"You passed out from a fever and hit your head," Jesse said softly and turned to his partner. "Pupils are dilated, I think he has a concussion. Fever's at 103, probably going to need stitched. Vitals are steady, blood pressure is a bit high." Alexa looked back at Jesse and nodded.

"Brother says that when he woke up he asked what happened a bunch and it was explained to him each time." Alexa smiled and walked over to us.

"Okay, let's get moving," Jesse said and they transferred me carefully onto a stretcher. Trying not to move my head too much. Eric followed us into the ambulance, trying to get a hold of our parents.

"Try and stay awake for me buddy," Jesse asked me, I didn't even realize that I was fading in and out of reality.

"Spinning," I slurred and Eric rubbed my arm slowly. I felt as if I was in a washing machine, spinning over and over again. "Gonna—" I was cut off by the urge to vomit. I slapped a hand to my mouth and Jesse acted fast. I was rolled over and soon had thrown up my entire stomach. I was sure there was nothing left but it just kept coming up.

"M'done," My stomach felt slightly better but my head still throbbed.

"We're super close," Jesse said and in seconds I was being rushed in and worked on my doctors.

"His fevers at 104.2 now!" Someone announced. I was covered in ice packs and the room was spinning as doctors and nurses moved quickly around me.

"I-I-I," I couldn't see straight and my whole body felt as if it were on fire. I was boiling and my head was for sure going to explode. I felt like I was falling forward even though I was sitting down. Soon enough the world faded into oblivion.

I slowly opened my eyes to see a fuzzy figure moving around.

"Nghhh," I groaned softly. The person beside me jumped up and pressed a button.

"S-Sam?" The person questioned, voice lingered with uncertainty. Then everything clicked, that voice I was hearing was my older brother, Eric.

"Ericcc" I slurred and turned my head towards him. A person in a white coat walked in before I could say anything else.

"Good to see you're awake! I'm Doctor Garcia, how're you feeling?"

I looked at her with a puzzled expression. I felt...weird. "My head hurts, I feel nauseous, and my body is achy." I tried to say but it came out jumbled. Dr. Garcia seemed to understand and began to go over my diagnoses.

"Okay, your fever is down and back at a normal rate, for a fever. You have a concussion from when you passed out. We had to give you a few stitches but those will dissolve on their own so you won't need to come back. You have a case of the flu, but combined with dehydration and exhaustion, you passed out." I nodded after she finished talking but most of that went right over my head. All I understood was concussion, flu, and fever normal.

"When can he go home?" Eric asked looking up at the doctor.

"He can go home in about an hour, you'll have to sign some papers to get him released."

Eric agreed, signed the papers, and in an hour I was home.

The next week went by in a blur. My fever broke at the end of the week. During the week though consisted of vomiting, bad migraines, dizziness, and sleeping. I probably slept for at least 3 of the days. It was the only way to forget about the headaches.

When I was feeling better I was sent back to school, Eric begged me to call him if I ever felt bad. After the past week I agreed with no hesitation. Keith was glad I was okay, he even visited a few times. I felt bad that he'd gotten so scared, Eric too. They both reassured that it could've happened to anyone.

From then on I was sure to always tell someone if I felt ill at all. Since then I've felt much, much better. There were only a few long term effects from my concussion. Sometimes I forget what's going on, at times I still get pretty bad migraines also. Doctor Garcia prescribed medication and for the most part it helps a lot.

My parents felt horrible for not being here during the time I was sick but eventually everything was better.

Sorry guys...I suck at endings! This was a longer one but I hoped you enjoyed!
