Chapter 17

Y/n POV

Four elements...

One spirit...

Two worlds...

"No!" I gasp awake and sit up in bed. I reach to my right for Elsa but I feel she's not there. I turn to look and see she's not in bed. I throw my legs over the side of the bed and stand. Out the window, I see small flashes of light like twinkling stars. I look closer and see little symbols on them.

My head hurts like someone just took a hammer to the back of my skull.

Four elements...

My mind fills with images from my dream of Elsa trapped within her own ice. My body shivers and I feel so cold. I see the castle go dark, in fact, the whole kingdom goes dark. The water stops flowing. I watch as the Arendelle flag is ripped from its pole and lost to the night. The floor shakes and people scream in fear. I gasp and stumble back from the window.

I turn and throw open our room door before sprinting down the hall looking for Elsa. I throw open some balcony doors and gasp as I see thousand of tiny crystals everywhere. I look over the edge and see Elsa standing over the water on some ice. In the distance, I see a flash of color before the crystals begin to fall from the sky.

Behind me, I hear Anna gasp. "What's going on?" She asks. Before I can respond the lights go out in the castle as all the fire disappears. My eyes widen. "We gotta go. Now!"

Kristoff and Olaf rub the sleep from their eyes as they wander into the hall wondering what's going on.

"Get everyone out! Now!" I tell Anna. Kristoff looks much more awake as he helps Anna round up all the castle staff and get them out of the castle. I turn down the halls looking for Elsa. "Elsa!" I shout. I make it out through a back door to the castle as the wind picks up. I stumble out into the street as the wind tosses me around. I look down at my hands and I swore I saw snowflakes but I blink and they're gone.

I rush past a fountain only to see that the water stopped flowing.

"Earth is next," I whisper. I rush through the streets following the crowd. Up ahead I see Anna leading some people to the safety of the cliffs.

I hear a familiar voice behind me. I turn and see Elsa ushering people to safety. I try to take a step toward her but the wind pushes me forward as the ground begins to rumble like waves. I nearly trip but a strong wind keeps me on my feet.

I stumble along with the crowd, getting closer to the cliffs. I look over my shoulder to see the flag of Arendelle, that me and Elsa put up hours before, blow off its pole getting lost in the wind. I shudder and continue on with the crowd.

Once everyone has reached the cliffs, everything stops, and the night air is filled with an eerie quiet. I look around and spot Elsa among the crowd. "Elsa!" I run to her.

"y/n!" She throws her hands wide ready for a hug. I launch myself into her arms and hold her tight. "What happened? What did you do? What was that?" I ask when I finally pull away to look her in the eyes. "I think I woke the elements." She says sheepishly. "How?"

Before Elsa can respond Anna comes over and we move away from the crowd to explain to Anna what's been going on. We explain to her that Elsa's been hearing voices. Anna looks confused and worrying plus a little bit of hurt.

"Wait you've been hearing a voice? And you didn't think to tell me?" Anna asks.

"I didn't want to worry you," Elsa says.

"But you told y/n!" Anna points at me.

"That's different," Elsa says.

"How is it different? We made a promise not to shut each other out!" Anna yells. "If you can tell y/n, you can tell me. Just... please tell me what's going on!" Anna begs.

Elsa looks from Anna to me. I take her hand in mine reassuring her that it'll be okay and sending her a look saying it would be better if you tell Anna everything. However, my heart fills with guilt because I've been keeping my own secrets about my chills and strange dream. Elsa takes a deep breath and looks at Anna, "I woke the magical spirits of the enchanted forest." She says it rather quickly and Anna stands there stud seemingly at a loss for words.

"Uh... okay, that's definitely not what I thought you were going to say." She pauses and then an idea hits her, "Wait. The enchanted forest? The one father warned us about?" Anna asks.

"Yes." This time it's me that speaks up. "My mother told me that something like this would happen. I always thought it wasn't possible. Elsa why did you wake the spirits. How did you wake them?"

"Because of the voice." Elsa looks at me.

"The voice told you to?" I ask.

"Not exactly. I know it sounds crazy... but I believe whoever's calling me is good." Elsa explains. My mind flashes with the images from my dream, I can't help but think that all this is connected.

"How can you say that?" Anna asks. She gestures to the kingdom below, "Look at our kingdom!"

"I know. It's just that... my magic can feel it. I can feel it." Elsa explains and I nod. "I believe you, Elsa. But this could be something dangerous." I say.

Elsa nods and Anna is about to say something before the ground begins to rumble again, but this time the ground does roll like waves instead is feels like something coming this way.  "Oh no." I say.

"What now?" Anna adds.

In the distance coming down from the mountain are a bunch of boulders. No, not just boulders. Trolls. I watch as one of the trolls jumps into Kristoff's arms exclaiming about how they missed him.

Pabbi rolls over to us and up onto a small rock cropping. "Well never a dull moment with you three. I hope you're prepared for what you've done, Elsa." He says. "Angry magical spirits are not for the faint of heart."

"Why are they still angry?" Anna asks. "What does all of this have to do with Arendelle?"

"Let me see what I can see," Pabbi says and raises his hands. Blue, purple, and green smoke fill the air showing us snippets of the future. The image of a dam takes shape. "The past is not what it seems." Pabbi continues waving his hands.

"My mother used to say that," I mutter. Pabbi looks at me and nods. The scene change to two groups of people shaking hands. "A wrong demands to be righted," Pabbi explains as the image turns red and is replaced with two swords clashing. "Arendelle is not safe. The truth must be found." The image of Arendelle cracks and fades. "Without I see no future."

Elsa gasps and squeezes my hand tighter. A shiver runs up my spine. I turn to Pabbi as Kristoff jogs over to us, "no future? What does that mean? Why? How?"

Pabbi holds up his hand to silence me, "When one can see no future... all one can do is the next right thing." He explains.

"The next right thing?" I whisper.

Elsa lets go of my hand and fiddles with her braid, "The next right thing...  is for me to go to the enchanted forest and find that voice." She turns suddenly to look at Kristoff, "Kristoff can I borrow your wagon... and Sven?"

Kristoff makes a face of disapproval, "I'm not very comfortable with the idea of that."

"Elsa you can't go alone," I say.

"I have to. I can't put you in danger." Elsa says placing a hand on my shoulder.

"No, you are not going alone." This time Anna speaks up and walks over to us.

"Anna, y/n, no," Elsa says. "I have my powers to protect me. You guys don't."

I place my hands on my hips and Anna rolls her eyes. "Excuse me we climbed the north mountain..." Anna starts.

"Survived a frozen heart and saved you from Anna's ex-boyfriend," I add.

"All without powers so, ya know, we're coming," Anna says and grabs my arm pulling me next to her. Kristoff comes up behind us and places an arm around Anna's shoulders, "Me too. I'll drive." Elsa looks completely lost as she stares at us in confusion.

"I'll bring the snacks!" Olaf shouts as he runs by in a skirt made of the crystal diamonds.

Elsa sighs and I step forward to take her hands in mine. I rub circles on her palms to calm her down. "It will be okay. We look after each other, right?" Elsa nods and gives me a soft smile. We turn to Pabbi as he speaks, "I will look after your people."

Anna places a hand over her heart and smiles warmly at the troll, "Please make sure they stay out of the kingdom until we return." Pabbi nods, "Of course."

"Let's let them know," Elsa says and we all turn to tell the people about our plan.

"Y/n." Pabbi calls to me.

I turn and look at him. "Yes?"

"I'm worried for her. We have always feared Elsa's powers were too much for this world... now we must pray they are enough." Pabbi explains.

I exhale sharply as the image from my nightmare of Elsa frozen in ice flashes in my mind. "I won't let anything happen to her."

I promised.

Pabbi nods with a soft smile on his face, but it turns somber as he takes my hand. "I fear for you as well. Tell me, have you seen things? Glimpses of things moments before they actually happen?"

I look at him with wide eyes, "How?"

"Your mother had the gift. She saw something years ago asking me what it meant. It was something about you. What it was I can not recall but..." Pabbi pulls out a folded piece of paper with a leather rope tied to a purple crystal. He places the items in my hands. "The night before she left she came to me and gave me this, to give to you at the right time. When the elements began to stir after so many years. She said you'd know when to open it and what it would mean."

I twist the crystal around in my hand while I look over the folded yellowed paper. "She knew she would die boarding that boat, didn't she?" I mutter.

"Yes." Pabbi closes his hands around mine, securing the paper and necklace between my palms. "Your mother was extraordinarily gifted, and she knew one day you would carry that same burden. Don't lose sight of the light, y/n."

I nod, "I won't Pabbi."

Pabbi smiles before looking down at my hands. "Your hands... they're still very cold my dear."

I pull my hands away and stand up straight before shoving the note and necklace into my pocket. "I'm fine, don't worry. I'll bring them back and Arendell will be safe again." I turn and begin walking toward Elsa and Anna.

"Goodbye, y/n."

I look over my shoulder and nod softly, "Goodbye."
