Ch23. look how they shine for you

My blaring alarm clock sounded. 6:00 pm. Today was the day. The second task was done, and it had been a while since everything happened with Bary Crouch. We finally decided on a day to go on an actual date. And that day was today. Putting down the book I had been reading on my bed I reached over and turned it off leaving the room in silence. I had already picked out what I was going to wear last night so I wouldn't stress today. Spring had come, bringing in warmer weather. As much as I loved the winter here, the weather was getting old. It sucks having to put on 20 layers just to go outside.

Letting my feet hit the cold ground I sat at my desk, ready to start getting ready. Combing my fingers through my wavy hair I gathered the top section and began to braid. Reaching the end I fastened the braid feeling satisfied with my work. I stared intensely at myself in the mirror trying to get my makeup perfect. I don't know why I was nervous, anything we do today shouldn't be too different than all the times we've hung out in the past four years. Just now we're together.

Finally, after stressing over every detail, I finished. Putting on my outfit I twisted my necklace around making sure the locket was right in front. It was by far my favorite gift I've ever received. I hadn't taken it off since he put it on. Even when we were fighting I couldn't bring myself to do it. Didn't mean I didn't tuck it under my robes whenever he was around though.

After slipping on my shoes I make sure to grab my wand. Twisting in the mirror I gave myself one more look before heading out the door and down the stairs.

Turning the corner, Ron stood near the bottom of the stairs staring at...something in his hand.

At the sound of my steps, his face sprang up. His eyebrows unknit and raised slightly. Doe-eyed his mouth melted into a wide grin.

"Hey!"

Reaching out his free hand for mine, I intertwined them before leaning in and placing a quick kiss on his lips.

"Hey! What ya got there?"

Being closer now I could see the object in more detail. It was clearly some type of plant but it looked a little... dead? Its petals were still a lively soft pink but they were all down-turned towards the floor.

Grimacing he stared back down at the plant.

"They're supposed to be flowers. I made the mistake of asking Neville for help. I thought he'd know what you'd like."

Yeah probably shouldn't ask Nev, but my stomach still flipped at the gesture.

Letting out a small chuckle I grasped the flowers from his hand and further examined them.

"Yeah, Neville has an interesting idea of what a good type of flower is. Do you know what kind they are?" I questioned staring back up.

His hand flew up, scratching the back of his now-tilted head.

"Well, I asked for the best-looking one he had that he thought you'd like. He knocked on my door this morning holding this thing. He said it's an Angel's trumpet? They'd look better if they weren't so..." picking up one of the flowers he placed it upright and let it fall back into its downward position. "Droopy."

A small frown was set on his face, but I found it funny and endearing.

"Well, I still love them thank you"

Tugging him forward I gave him somewhat of a hug. The best I could do while still holding on to the flowers. His lips tugged into his famous lopsided grin.

"Good. Oh! And do not eat them!"

His hands came up in warning.

"Ya know I wasn't planning on it" I laughed.

"I know. Neville let me know right as he left that they happened to be highly poisonous. Kid has a funny idea on what to give to your girlfriend."

Heat rose to my face as a fluttery feeling occurred in my chest. I know we were together and have been for a bit now, but hearing him call me that still had me feeling giddy.

"Yeah, that sounds like Neville. I promise I will not eat them. Stay here I'm going to run them up"

Running upstairs I placed them in the empty vase that used to hold the dittany Neville gave me months ago.

After I sped back down he once again took my hand and started to lead me out of the common room.

"Soooo. Where are we going?" I beamed with a skip in my step.

"You'll know soon"

We trailed left entering the suspension bridge. It looked like we were heading to the astronomy wing.

"Are we going to the movie room?" I question

"Yeah for now. The main thing I wanted to do can't happen till later tonight, sooo I had to find out a way to kill time while still making it good."

Coming up to the wall the door slowly appeared.

The familiar room welcomed us both in as Ron led me over to the couch. The once-empty coffee table was now filled.

I turned to him in confusion waiting for him to explain.

"Well, I didn't want this to be like any other time we'd come here so I tried to change it up a bit. I raided the kitchens early this morning and drug all this stuff here."

The table was filled with different desserts and some regular food it seemed. But what caught my eye was a plate dead center on the table that was stacked high with pumpkin pasties.

Tugging on his elbow I sent him a bright smile

"You know me so well"

His ginger locks swayed as he shook his head while bumping our shoulders gently.

"That's not it though"

He reached down and pulled out a few items from the lower part of the table. Placing them down on his lap he spread them out letting me get a good look at them.

They were movies. Muggle movies. Specifically, they were all movies that I had been wanting to watch.

"They're not from the room."

I stared at him surprised. Typically we just think of a movie and it appears in the room. The trick is I couldn't take them out. Every time I would put them up in my room, they would disappear. Even the clothes we wore after the ball were gone when I got back from lunch. That's why Gran sent me some for Christmas. I wanted to start actually owning them so I could watch them outside of school when I wanted to. But how did he get these?

Noticing my confused stare he continued on.

"I wrote to my dad a couple of weeks ago and asked him to find them. You know how much he loves muggle things, he was honestly excited to be able to interact with muggles to get them."

Looking back down at the movies I inspected them more.

There were three in total. All ones I had babbling on about recently. The first one was Misery by Stephen King, a man I was becoming a big fan of. The other two were The Truman Show and 10 Things I Hate About You. I had intended to watch that one with Hermione, but my guess is he didn't know it was a chick flick before he got it.

"And before you start going off on me spending money it technically doesn't count. Muggle money is basically useless here so it wasn't a big deal spending it."

Staring down at the DVD boxes I was stunned. He was never this good at planning out gifts or anything like that. But this was the second thing he's gotten me that blew me out of the water. Looking back up he looked like he did the night he gave me the locket. Anxious and fidgeting. To put his mind at rest I leaned in placing my lips on his blushed cheek.

"I love it, thank you so much"

His anxious demeanor was washed away with a dreamy grin.

"Which one do you wanna watch first? You've done so much already you should at least get to pick it out" I argued

Letting out a puff of air he picked up the movies and inspected each of them. Almost immediately he chucked 10 Things I Hate About You back on the table

"Well definitely not that one"

After a short chuckle, he continued staring until he extended his hand, giving me the one he chose.

The Truman Show.

I could have guessed that. Out of a thriller, comedy, and a romcom, I think it's obvious what he'd want. Taking the DVD out I walked over to the player and stuck it in. Walking back over to the large couch, Ron had already acquired multiple pillows and blankets, getting ready to create our cocoon. Hauling multiple items from the food pile I crawled onto the couch and into Ron's open arms.

Fluffing the blanket it floated back down, enveloping us in a pool of warmth. Legs intertwined, I laid my head on his chest while his hand instinctively threaded in my hair.

The screen lit up with the opening shot of the movie. Grabbing a couple of pumpkin pasties from beside me I plopped one in my mouth and held the other out for Ron. It felt good to be here on our first date. This place was always so special to us. Not to mention this is kind of where everything started. That day we almost kissed in here led us to where we are now. It felt good to replace the memory of him charging out of the room with this one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Truman show was crazy. It also gave Ron a new fear.
"But what would you do! What if thousands of people were watching us right now? What if you're only on this date with me because you're getting a pay raise?"
That one got him a swift slap on the chest.
Overall we both really liked it.
Couldn't say the same about Misery. It was definitely less scary than some of the other ones we'd watched. Honestly, I think Ron was more afraid of the idea of The Truman Show than getting kidnapped by some megafan psycho.
That being said his eyebrows were knit, and his nose scrunched most of the movie.
That left us with 10 Things I Hate About You.
I absolutely loved it. Surprisingly so did Ron. At least that's what I think. He won't say outright he enjoyed it. He'd just nod his head and say "Yeah it was fine".
But he talked throughout the whole movie calling out Heath Ledger.
"Why would he do that? She's bound to find out!"
The credits were flying around on the screen now. Picking up the remote Ron shut the TV off while staring at his watch.
"Okay, we're right on track. We can go to the actual destination now."
Standing from the couch he pries me out of the nest of blankets I had made.
My heart fluttered in my chest. Where could he be taking me? It was late now meaning we most likely weren't leaving the castle.
Exiting the movie room Ron led me up the stairs. After a few flights, it became obvious where we were going.
"The astronomy tower?" I questioned.
He remained silent as we trekked up the last set of stairs. Turning the corner there were multiple pillows and blankets laid out on the floor.
"Another cocoon!"
A laugh escaped his lips as he shook his head.
"Yes you can still be bundled up here"
Walking over to the wall we took a seat on the pile. Immediately I grabbed a spare blanket, wrapping it around me.
"Okay. Now that I'm warm what's the big surprise."
Checking his watch another time he turned his head to the sky.
"Well, I know how much you love it up here so I thought it would be nice to come up here at night. That's a bit boring though, so I got a little help from Hermione," he admitted scratching the back of his neck. While I already knew I'd like whatever he planned I was excited to hear Mione had something to do with it. Any idea that comes out of that big brain of hers is always great.
Bringing his hand down from the back of his neck he stared at his watch again.
"Okay, what's up with the watch? You got somewhere to be or something?" I mocked.
His cheeks blushed pink as his eyes jumped up to mine.
"Oh no, sorry. It's just supposed to be starting now."
Quirking a brow I stared into his olive eyes looking for more information.
"And what is supposed to be starting?"
Light erupted out of the sky illuminating every freckle on his pale face. My eyes shot up to the sky searching for what had caused the burst of light. For a moment everything was still. Then there it was again. A beam of light streamed across the night sky.
"That is what's supposed to be starting" his eyes glistened as more streams of light occurred. "Mione has been tracking this meteor shower as an assignment in her astronomy class. She let me know it would be starting tonight."
In a matter of seconds, the entire sky was covered in beams of light. The sky was glowing. It almost looked as if the sun was back out.
"This is...amazing! Why is no one else out watching this!?"
Placing an arm around my back his thumb ran slow circles on my arm
"It's pretty late to be out on a Thursday. Plus Mione said she was the only one tracking this particular meteor shower in her class so I took a chance and prayed to Godric that no one else would show up." he chuckled.
Laughing along with him I leaned into his side and shifted the blanket so it would be around him as well. His long fingers grabbed ahold of the other side of the blanket and spread it out so it evenly covered us. We both leaned back on the wall behind us and stared at the sky. It was a deep velvety black which only made the stars shine that much more. Each meteor is a brief but brilliant flash, leaving a luminous trail that quickly fades into the darkness. Some meteors are faint and swift, like a fleeting whisper, while others are vivid and intense, blazing a longer, more radiant path before dissipating. The sheer number of meteors, sometimes appearing in quick succession, creates a captivating, almost magical scene. Streaks of white, yellow, blue, and even green light up the sky. I had never seen anything like it.
"Ya know muggles say shooting stars can grant wishes.'
His head that was resting on top of mine lifted as he stared down at me.
"Oh yeah?"
Twisting in my spot I stared up at him, still seeing the blazing comets in the reflection of his eyes.
"Yeah. We should make a wish. Seems it would be an awful waste if we didn't considering there's so many tonight."
For a moment he started back up at the sky. His pink lips pursed together, I could almost see the gears turning in his head.
"Alright. Well, I guess I wish for-"
Scrambling from my seat I slap a palm over his mouth stopping his sentence. His wild eyes burned into mine while his hands came up in defeat.
"What the bloody hell are you doing?"
His voice came out muffled until he gently moved my hand from his mouth.
"Sorry," I giggled "They also say if you say your wish out loud it won't come true."
"So you attacked me!"
A bewildered smile crept on his face as he pulled me back in, getting back in our old position.
"I said sorry! If anything you should be saying thank you, I just saved your wish!"
Letting out a hard laugh his fingers started brushing through my hair.
"Yeah, sure."
"Okay, let's make a wish on three, and don't say it out loud!"
In unison, we tilted our heads back up ready for our wish.
"Alright,
One
Two
Three!"
A giant meteor stretched across the sky so bright it almost looked like fireworks.
After taking the beauty in for a second I shut my eyes, ready to make my wish.
I wish we'll always be like this.
There were a lot of things I wanted in life. Money, my dream job, safety, material objects. But all of that either seemed like a waste or something I could work towards. I'm not afraid to work hard to get all the things I want out of life. The only one that was sort of out of my hands was safety. We seemed to constantly be in danger. But I know a meteor isn't going to eliminate Lord Voldemort from the planet so there's one thing. Plus I know danger follows where Harry goes. But that's what I signed up for. He's one of the best people I've ever met, and there is no way in Hell I'd be able to sit around and watch him go through all of this and not help him. But what I truly couldn't control was my relationship with Ron. I could try my hardest to make everything perfect, but if he ever loses feelings for me there's nothing I can do about that. Being with him these past few months has been the happiest I've ever been. I couldn't think of anything else I'd want besides feeling the way I do now with him for the rest of my life.
After a minute or so my eyes fluttered open. I could feel his eyes on me before I saw them.
"Did you make your wish?" I asked
I could feel my heart burn in my chest as his lopsided grin displayed perfectly across his lips.
A hand cupped my jaw, spreading warmth to my face.
"Yeah," he whispered.
Slowly, he leaned in, his breath mingling with mine in the stillness of the night. His lips finally met mine in a soft, tentative kiss that quickly deepened. In a burst of courage, his teeth sank into my bottom lip. Taking advantage of my now parted lips, his tongue explored my mouth. His warm hand slipped down from my cheek to my hip as mine threaded in his hair. The world around us seemed to fade away, leaving only the sensation of his lips on mine, the warmth of his embrace, and the steady rhythm of their synchronized breaths. Time seemed to stretch and bend, each kiss an eternity and an instant all at once. The night enveloped us, wrapping us in its quiet, star-lit embrace.
I wasn't sure how long we were there for, but what I did know was
I was falling hard for Ron Weasley.
