Deaf

based on a short film called Silent Child but it's revised in my own way :)
enjoy :)

A piercing world of silence was all that she could hear. Maybe feel the vibrations of bouncing objects or read the lips of the people who talk behind her back. She sat in class and watched as the teacher continued to talk about the math lesson. Not fully understanding what was going on. She felt a piece of paper hit the back of her head which caused her to turn around. "Loser!" someone whispered but she didn't care. She couldn't hear.

Her parents never really cared about her, difference. They only cared for the other two kids who lived with them. No one in her family knew how to sign, well her siblings do, all they did was mouth slowly as if she was a dumb dear in the headlights.  She didn't feel the vibrations in her hallow ears after the bells ring but her older brother Mason came and tapped her on the shoulder. "Let's go." he signed and she nodded and gathered her stuff.

Mason, her older brother, and Paisley, her older sister were the only ones in the family who knew sign. Parents were never to bothered with it and they didn't want their sister going down that same path of abuse they did. Every time her parents talked to her, one of them would be signing behind them so she could understand what they were saying.

"Maya?" he waved to get her attention. "what?" she signed back. "you ok?"
"fine."

As they continued to walk, another tall human being bumped into her. Her hair wavy and flowed down to her shoulders. Long tan arms and legs complemented the brunettes outfit. A pair of jeans, cuffed at the end paired with a white top that tied right above the belly button and converse that appeared to be covered in different colors of paint. "sorry." she said as Maya continued to look at the fallen books.

The tall girl was in confusion at the moment. Wondering as to why she kept looking down at the ground. "Hello?" she slightly tapped her shoulder. Maya's head shot up quicker than the eyes could see. Mason still standing there watching the two interact. "she's deaf." Mason whispered to the other girl. "Oh. My apologies."
"It's fine." Maya signed which only left her more confused.
"she said it's fine." Mason chuckled.

The older girl pulled out a small piece of paper and wrote a message on it. Handing it to the girl in front of her and then smiling and walking off. "What's it say?" Mason asked.
"Met me in the library during lunch." Maya's cheeks flustered a bright rosy red and her eyes sparkled in the light.

Maya walked into the slightly packed library with her lunch in her hand. She glanced the room a couple times and then sighed when she couldn't find the person she was looking for. As she turned around, the girl appeared again in front of her very out of breath. "I'm so so sorry. I had to finish my work and then I rushed to go get lunch and..yea i'm here now." Maya just looked at her. She was talking way to fast to understand what she was saying but she got a little bit of what she said.

The girl opened the door and Maya walked in. They both found a seat at the back of the library and sat across from each other. "You're pretty." Maya signed. The girl cocked her head to the side in confusion. Maya then got out a piece of paper and wrote down that exact thing. The girl signed "thank you" in return which shocked Maya.

(the paper they're writing on
Maya
Mysterious Girl)

you sign??

only a little. the more simple phrases.

maybe i could teach you more

i would like that (:

yayy

how do you sign your name??

Maya looked back up at her and formed the letter 'M' right at her cheek and swiped it across her chin. The girl focused and copied the same move. Maya cheered and clapped.

why that motion??

my brother gave it to me. the M stands for maya obvi and the little swipe is kinda a personality thing. i used to fight a lot as a baby so it kinda shows that.

I like it

What's your name??

Stefania

pretty.

Maya looked up and smiled at the girl. The both of them continued to laugh and talk through the lunch hour. And by talk, ofc they were writing on the paper. But Maya did teach her a couple small sentences and starter statements she could use. When Maya saw everyone start to leave the library and the hall way fill up with students, she figured it was time to go back to class.

"Bye Stef." she signed smiling from ear to ear. "Bye Maya." Stefania said in return.

Returning upon home Maya walked at a distance behind her siblings. She was trapped in between her thoughts of todays events. As she walked she tapped her fingers heavily against her thigh. Looking up every once in a while to be sure her siblings were still in front of her.

As they all walked up to the house, there were two cars in the front driveway meaning both of their parents were home. "Mason. Mason!" Maya tried her best to talk out loud. She never really knew what her vice sounded like but she knew when she did make sound someone always answered so that proves they did hear her.

"What?" he signed turning around slowly.
"Are they gonna be yelling again?" she signed furiously.
"I don't know. If they are then I'll tell you."
Maya nodded and once Paisley got the door opened they all walked in. Mason slightly tapped his younger sister and pointed his head towards the stairs. Meaning he wanted her to go, as the parents were yelling at each other in the kitchen.

She didn't waste anytime and zoomed upstairs in to her room. Sitting her bag on the floor and taking out her math binder to get started on some homework. After sitting there for a while and getting more than half of it done, she felt the vibrations in her stomach signaling she was hungry. Deciding to go downstairs for a snack, she walked into the kitchen right when a glass vase was getting thrown and it hit her right upside the head. Cutting her deeply.

She felt the blood rushing down the side of her face and looked up to see both of her parents standing there in shock and he siblings running quickly to the kitchen. "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?" Mason yelled at his mom, as she was the reason for the vase to be in the air.
"Maya you ok?" Paisley asked. Maya shook her head 'no' and the two sisters then found their way to the bathroom.

"What are they saying about me?" Maya asked. Paisley just shook her head no. "Tell me!" Maya said in that raspy voice of hers. Paisley looks her dead in the eyes and said no, sternly.  The younger blonde just accepted it and left the older girl finish cleaning her cut.

"That little brat deserved it." their mom snickered.
"SHES NOT A BRAT!"
"Son lower your voice." his dad chimed in.
"WHY? ALL WE ASKED WAS THAT MAYA AT LEAST GETS TREATED BETTER THAN BOTH ME AND PAISLEY DID BUT YOU ACT LIKE ITS IMPOSSIBLE!"
"Son!"
"NO MOM! I'm so tired of this freaking shit. First you treat her differently because she can't freaking hear and instead of trying to help her and you learn how to speak her language you just throw her in the dirt. Why would you take that extra time you spend in work fucking around with some side man and actually help your daughter!!"
"Mason!"
"No. You didn't think we didn't notice. Dad here has been blind by it."

"Katherine what is he talking about?!"
"Nothing."
"Dad...Maya isn't yours." Mason said abruptly.
"MASON!" Katherine yelled.
"Is that true?"
There was a moment of silence in between the family.
"I should've known. No one in none of our family has any type of history of being deaf." The dad grabbed his keys and coat and furiously walked out the door.

Katherine stormed out the kitchen. "Mason if you've ruined this family I swear.."
"It was ruined when you cheated. I don't care about you anymore. Maya is my main concern at this moment. You got yourself into this, find a way out."
