THE ULTIMATE ROMANCE MINI AWARDS

Sponsored by SapphirianJ82.

I entered Ancilla in Best Unique Character Names because let's face it, the gimmick of "nobody gets a proper name; major characters only get use-names that denote their function, and those are subject to change as their roles change throughout the story" is unique. Also possibly insane. (I also avoid naming locations, although anybody who resided in the cities and towns I referenced will know them instantly, and anyone who attended the institutions of learning I referenced will recognize them. I don't use the "v" word once, but my protagonist and her mentor are both low-key vampires... My avoidance of names and labels is done for a very specific reason, and anyone curious can read the Afterword).

"Ancilla" is Latin for "assistant" or "handmaiden" (not the Margaret Atwood sort of handmaiden!) while "eromene" is Homeric Greek for "beloved." "Magister" is Latin for "teacher," and "Erastes" for "lover." And that is the closest I will ever get to giving those two proper names.

In addition to the Best Unique Character Names category, I entered Ancilla into Best Steamy Erotic Scene (IMO, that would be every sex scene in the entire book, but I had to pick just one - I can't remember which one I picked) and Best Romantic Scene.

UPDATE (6/5/2025) - This contest was dissolved. Sapphirian has a new one. I entered it. It gets its own page.
