A New Opportunity

At around 11 am, he decides to stroll around downtown for a bit. The streets bustling with citizens going about their day. Pretty usual stuff, considering the fact that the country was probably going through another financial crisis.

He continues walking, and something catches his attention. A few eyes look in his direction, but they're probably surprised at seeing a foreigner at such a small town. He chuckles to himself, realising he's probably already a bit famous. Well, that's a problem. Not that He doesn't mind. It's just a bit... Strange now.

He sees something at the corner of his eye. A sushi restaurant, and A pretty decent sized one too. Hmm, why not? After all, he's here to explore this place. He decides to enter it. Lunch was just around the corner anyways.

The inside was both modern looking, mixed with a bit of traditional designs. Typical, as this was what Japan was known for. The air felt warm and lively, as other diners sat at tables, chatting and laughing away. He realises there's no seats left, other than one next to a nerdy looking dude reading a novel. He sighs, before heading towards the guy and sitting on the opposite side of the table.

"Hey, hope you don't mind me"

The guy looks up, and puts his book down, before smiling and saying "Hello" in Japanese. Clint says hello back, before pausing for a while, then speaking up.

"You speak English?"

Surprisingly, the guy responds fluently.

"Yeah, I do. Nice to meet you"
"Uh, hey. Wow, you actually do. Kind of rare to see a Japanese person speaking English"

The guy chuckles sheepishly at this, before pushing his book aside.

"May I know your name? Mine's Onni. Weird name, I know"
"No, no. It's a pretty cool name. Better than mine, at least"

Onni smiles warmly, and clears his throat.

"I'm sure it can't be that bad. Every name is unique, no matter the meaning. Sorry for making assumptions, but I'm assuming you're American?"

Clint nods.

"Yeah, I am. Name's Clint, nice to meet you too"

The conversation catches the attention of some of the workers there, I'll explain to you why later. Just then, a waiter approaches them and Onni says something in Japanese, leaving Clint a bit confused. Onni them turns his attention room back to Clint, as the waiter leaves.

"Don't worry, I ordered something I know you'll love"

"I could've done it myself, you know?"

Onni chuckles, before dropping a bomb (No, not Hiroshima or Nagasaki).

"Well, I'm the owner of this restaurant after all. I know what my clients want"

Clint sits there, dumbfounded. He's talking to the damn owner?

"W-well, I apologise for any manners I was lacking-"

Onni just chuckles, amused by this.

"No, no. It's alright! You're fine, man"

Clint sighs, glad he's on his good side. The two continue talking, almost like friends, as the workers watch them bicker, almost happy that the two are getting along. A few minutes later, their order arrives, and Clint is amazed at the taste.

"Wow, I haven't had sushi this good back in America, or anywhere else in Japan. You sure you're not an entrepreneur in disguise?"

Onni laughs at this statement. The guy sure has a good sense of humour. Clint is confused, as he wasn't used to seeing someone laugh so contentedly.

"What? Why are you laughing?" He asks, with a questionable look.

Onni just waves his hand dismissively.

"Nah, I'm fine. You're just funny"

Clint chuckles nervously, before taking another bite of the food. His eyes gleaming with happiness from every bite, as the food melts in his tongue (Wow, I'm explaining food like it's heaven. Probably true though).

Clint eats, then pauses for a while and pushes the plate aside. His demeanour seems to have changed, as his face shows he was thinking about something deep. Onni recognises his expression, and his attitude changes as well.

"Dude, you alright?"

Clint looks up, a bit startled at the sudden intervention to his thoughts.

"Uh, yeah. I'm fine. Just thinking about something..."

Onni attempts to say something, before pausing, then deciding to keep his thoughts to himself. After a few minutes, Clint decides to head on throughout his day, not before saying goodbye to Onni. He strolls the streets, contemplating his next decision, before pushing his thoughts aside, realising he thinks too much.

Onni then speaks up. "By the way, where are you going after this?"

A bit caught off guard, he clears his throat.

"Well. I don't have much plans, really. Was thinking of exploring this part of town for a bit before moving on. The view here is nice, although the air is a bit smoky"

Onni slowly nods. Understandably, this place had it's ups and downs. The weather was not on the positive side.

"Pollution, am I right? I mean, Japan is a pretty advanced country, with good technology. But what's change and improvement without sacrifices?"

"The way you said that was uncanny, to say the least" Clint said, now feeling a bit exposed about the situation here compared to his home country. "I find it quite interesting here, actually"

Onni raises an eyebrow. "What makes you say that? Well, if I'm guessing, you're a foreigner. And foreigners tend to explore other cultures"

"At least I'm not racist, otherwise this place would've tasted the ground"

"You wouldn't have came here in the first place. Besides, I've had my fair share of customers who complain solely because they think they're... Well, more advanced. I don't know how to word it"

Clint nods slowly. For a guy who seems like he spends most of his time in literature, he's pretty open to the world around him. Clint then spoke up. "Must be a pain in the ass, huh?"

Onni chuckles a bit, taking one of the sushi from Clint's plate. That wasn't very civilised, but who cares when you're eating happily making a new friend?

"Its very hard to run a restaurant, despite the looks of it. Even the simplest things require complex calculations to run. And sometimes, it isn't even worth it"

Clint speaks up right after Onni's sentence. "You sure know a lot. I mean, I don't blame you. You look like a guy who spends most of his time in a public library"

Onni chuckles a bit louder this time. "Can't blame me. The requirement in this country is... Hellish, to say the least"

Clint nods, and finishes up his sushi. He understood the issue here, and since they were facing another recession, might as well make society collapse before facing another dilemma.

"The recession isn't as bad as the one in 2008, it's survivable. I'm just worried about the future" Clint said, looking out the window with a "The hell am I doing?" Expression .

"You Americans worry too much. Don't start thinking too much. It's not healthy for you"

Clint smiles slightly, though his rough and jagged demeanour is still there, doing little to mask his tired face.

"Well then, I'll get going now. My job hunt can't wait any longer"

Onni tilts his head slightly, pouting. "Aww man. Already?"

Clint nods and gets up reluctantly, reaching into his pocket for some cash he could have left.

"Let's see... 20 yen?" He says, handing the money to him with both hands. Of course, this was a respectable gesture in Japan. Not doing so will probably get you in trouble.

"I'll take 15, since we're both broke anyways"

Clint chuckles a bit and hands the money to him, before heading out the door. "See you around" before exiting the restaurant. Once outside, he takes a deep breath and stretches, but immediately regrets it as the smell of car exhaust fills his lungs. He gags a bit, and covers his mouth before walking off. Onni sees this through the small window, and chuckles to himself, before getting back to whatever he was doing before.

Walking down the streets, he looks around for any signs of job wanted posters. To be honest, looking for a job through a computer at home would've been easier, but he needed lunch anyways. Besides, getting to know the locals and exploring this place would benefit him in some way. The sun halfway through the sky now, and he spots a poster. A bartender for hire.

"Oh... That'll do" He smiles a bit, but immediately stops as he knows that a grin from him looks like he wants to murder someone in cold blood. He's tired of walking anyways.

Entering the bar with his resume in hand, which unfortunately got folded when he was sitting with Onni (No, not the violent kind of folded), the manager spots him and greets him.

"Welcome. What can I get you?"

Clint, still not used to talking to people after his little incident, reluctantly shakes the manager's waiting hands. His grip was firm, catching the poor guy off guard. He thinks to himself "This guy has a red personality. Noted"

"I'm here for the job interview. I saw the sign at the door for hire, and thought-"

"Splendid! You're hired" The manager cut him off, leaving a bewildered and dumbfounded Clint standing there, wondering if his sanity was even intact.

"W-wait, huh? Really?" He stuttered, thinking this was a prank of some sort. If it was, that would be cruel, to say the least. But the manager just laughs it off, patting him hard on the shoulder.

"We don't need that resume, boy"

"I'm 22-"

"You can just get to work. Besides, I'm running very low on staff and need assistance quick. You're a foreigner, right?"

Clint was taken aback again by this observation. Was this guy a gypsy? But his looks did give him away a lot. Understandable, if you think about it, as he tends to have a charisma effect on women for his serious yet tired face.

"Y-yes... I'm American, actually" He says so with a hint of both pride and nervousness, which shouldn't make sense. Those two are nearly opposites.I

"Then you're willing to work for less money! Recession"

Ah, this guy was the money type. He wasn't actually nice out of his heart. Clint narrows his eyes slightly, realising this wasn't about anything personal. But he was relieved, as he didn't want what happened at his old life to happen again. Onni was an exception.

"Uh, yes..."

"Great, then I'll see you tomorrow. Pay is around 60 thousand yen a month. Sound good?"

Clint stood there, clocking in this new information. Mostly the exchange rate from yen to dollars. Let's see... Around 400 dollars. 377 to be exact. You might think this is a steal, but remember. Prices rise a lot. I mean, a lot. But before Clint could reply, he found himself already outside the bar, with his resume stamped approval from the manager. He shakes his head, processing how this all happened so fast. But he decides to push it aside like all thoughts and went home for the day.

The sun was starting to set, as he reached his apartment. The place was still a mess, but comfortable enough to live in for now. Borrowing a broomstick from the receptionist, who started to grow fond of Clint despite only meeting for a single day, started sweeping his apartment. Don't blame the owner, most of the dust came from his stuff, not the maid's.

As he's working, his ramen finally boils, and he takes a few bites of it, before settling it down to cool and sitting down by the window. And if you're wondering what his apartment looks like, search up "Saitama's apartment". That's what it looks like. Now alone with his thoughts, his mind starts to wander off into different things. But what caught his attention most was why the girls he met, both at Onni's restaurant and the lobby, were so eager to talk to him? Not like he's got a good personality, but maybe the way he looks. His eyes widen slightly, as he never bothered to check himself out in the mirror. No, that can't be. Maybe there was something on his face. Yeah, his face... But wouldn't Onni or the store manager tell him? Onni was also giving him a weird look, which looked a bit... Lustful? Dude, what the hell are you thinking? You're not gay.

Clint shakes his head and grabs his cup of ramen, wincing a bit in pain as it was still hot and he just grabbed it with his bare hands, but he slowly blows on it and takes a bite. Or sip, I don't know it's both liquid and solid. Now eating the ramen peacefully, he stares into the sky that is now dark, the city and towns being illuminated only by the state of the night sky, and some street lamps, which most in his part of town aren't even working. How come the city in the distance gets all the attention, but leave his town with nothing? Ah, capitalism...

While thinking, he finishes up his ramen and throw away the cup. Continuing to stare at the night sky on his chair, he's blissfully unaware of the fact he's actually slowly falling asleep.
