The pattern, she's noticed, grows stronger the harder her mother works to suppress it. Small wonder. The sibilant pattern is natural to her mother's speech: suppressing it is not. She feels her mother at her back, a presence as undeniable as her accent, imagines her mother framed by the worn, beaten screen door. Dark chestnut hair, caught in a single braid as thick as Jesse's wrist, runs the length of her mother's spine. Smooth skin, the color of pale, poured amber, flows over the fine bones of her mother's face and body. The setting sun would gleam translucent against that skin, dusting it with the faintest hint of gold. Anxiety would have narrowed those almond-shaped eyes, dark hazel eyes flecked with green and gold. Too damn bad.
