IRIS HAD BEEN THE ONLY GIRL IN THE GLADE FOR FOREVER. She came up a little less than a year after the first Glader, and they thought she was a witch or something at first. However, they came to accept that she was now one of them, and since there were only of handful of others there with them, she became one of the few leaders of their little community.

During her first month in the Glade, there were dozens of people getting cut or injured while working, which gave her the idea to form the Med-jacks. She was the only one, but infections decreased and productivity increased as she began her work. She was able to request some medical supplies from the people that put them there, and she used everything that she had.

When Jeff and Clint came up, she had some helpers, and they had their own little system running smoothly within another year. She was very helpful and friendly, which meant that she got around with most everyone in the Glade

But there was one exception.

JEM CAME UP IN THE BOX THREE MONTHS AFTER IRIS. Despite the fact that she had been there longer, he acted like she was the idiot that did not know anything. He was arrogant and ignorant, but for some reason, he immediately became pretty close with a lot of the guys, especially Gally.

However, he could not stand Iris. She was everything that he was not — kind, friendly, happy, etc. He did not understand why she was so happy to be stuck in a huge Maze with only the things they absolutely need to survive. It was suspicious.

So, he just moped around, doing what he needed to do to contribute. He was a Slicer alongside Winston, which was not the ideal situation since Winston happened to be best friends with the only girl there with them. That meant that Jem ended up having to deal with her a lot.

She was completely and utterly intolerable...until one day, she wasn't.
