Ever since he was little, Toby knew that there were some things he couldn't have.

It was when he was 7, and he was holding his mother's hand as they walked through the grocery store, and he saw it.

The blue power ranger, the newest kind.

"Mommy, mommy, can I get this?" he had asked, tugging his mom's arm.

"Sorry sweetie." His mom had ruffled his hair lovingly. "Money's tight right now... maybe another time."

Another time, another time. Those words were always prominent in his household.

His mother was his only parent, after his parents divorced, his mom gained custody of Toby. Not that his dad wasn't a bad one, they simply couldn't stay together and weren't a right fit. He went to see his father every other weekend, and that was a nice enough life for him.

Neither one remarried, which seemed to put his life at a standstill. Toby, or Tobias, was pretty much invisible.

He had a sharp tongue, black nail polish, and a camera worn around his shoulders like a crossbody bag, and everywhere he went, a sleeveless blue hoodie seemed to always be worn.

It was just his mom, his dad, and his camera. He was content in his own little world, without friends. Not like he was some cringey edgelord, he just simply didn't feel the need to make an effort to have a social life.

Until that day.

It was the senior-junior prom, and Toby, being in the yearbook club (clubs were required at his school, which Toby didn't mind, it allowed him to take lots of photos)ย

His mother insisted he dress up, so there he was, black button up dress shirt and blue tie, taking pictures of all the couples and groups that asked.

The girl and boy who always did some grand pose.

The friend group of boys and girls who seemed to all have a crush on one another.

The goth kids all in a circle, clad in black and didn't smile.

Dresses and suits of all colors, like a fluttering rainbow, with so many combinations of people...from so many different personalities.

This, this was why Toby loved to take pictures.

Until he saw them. The homecoming king and queen, the most popular couple in the school.

Robin and Celeste.

But his eyes weren't on her.

They were on him.

Blonde hair, green eyes that matched his own, and a royal blue varsity jacket.

A kind smile and a "please" before he asked for a picture.

All the others had run over and begged Toby for one, but he had smiled. As if he existed-

No. Perhaps he was being too desperate... maybe he was just polite?

"Hey," Robin had said, tilting his head to the side. "You're Shutterbug."

"Shutterbug...?" Toby said in surprise, in shock that Robin even spoke to him. "Is that what I'm known as, now? It's quite cute."

Robin just laughed. "Yeah. Always seen around campus with a camera. Everyone avoids you because they think you'll snitch or something if you catch them in the act."

"Haha... nah, I wouldn't."

"Are you gonna give me a name to the face, or should I just call you Bug?"

"Toby. That's mine."

"Toby. Nice ring to it..." Robin held out his hand for a handshake. "I assume you know who I am."

"Yep. Star student, stunning athlete... Robin McKay."

"That's me! This is Celeste, my girlfriend, as you know."ย

The girl was pretty, striking strawberry blonde hair, hazel eyes, and rose gold glasses, but there was something behind that smile of hers. Something...unusual.

As Toby dealt with his uncooperative camera, he could hear a brief exchange between them.

"Hey Cels, I'm gonna get another cupcake after this, wanna join me?"

"No, you've already eaten 3. Are you crazy? Eat anymore, and you'll become such a fat ass that they'll drop you from the basketball team."

"But-"

"I only do this because I care about you, okay baby?" She stroked his cheek. "This is all for your own good. As soon as you graduate, you're gonna go up to the big leagues and we'll live in a lovely house together, and you'll take me to every game, and afterwards we can dine at restaurants that we can only look in the windows in today- and have a dog!"

"But- I don't want to do basketball professionally-"

"Shhh...you're just lost. I'm here to guide you, okay? You don't know what you want. I do."

"Okay..."

Toby felt his blood boil. That wasn't...cool Like who would just ice him out like that? Poor guy... no wonder he was so friendly. Maybe he wanted to escape. Maybe he wanted a friend.

But for now, all Toby could do was capture their moment.

As he saw Celeste drag him off, Robin turned around and gave Toby a quick smile.

"I'll see you around, shutterbug!"

That warmed Toby from his heart to the tips of his toes. But it froze over just as fast. He was with Celeste. Toby wanted to set him free.

So, he had a mission now.

Get Robin McKay out of that mess.

People always liked the popular girl,

But Toby had his eyes on the popular boy.
