Chapter Seven

-Florida Derby Day-
The paddock was surrounded by eager racing fans to see the early Derby favorite, I Will Remember. The post positions and odds were:

1. Midnight Line 30/1
2. Rundown 5/1
3. The Only Prince 50/1
4. Settling Fog 10/1
5. I Will Remember 2/1
6. Red Alexei 8/1

I understood why Bubba was not respected by the betters, but, he did Place second to Rundown last out. But with I Will Remember here, it seemed like second or third was the best we'd get.

Nicole already here at Gulfstream because this was where she raced early in the year. She stood next to me as I watched the horses walk in front of us. I Will Remember, the big black colt was full of energy and you could see he was excited about this race, with that amount of energy from him our chances have diminished even more. Rundown, we remember him, the big beautiful chestnut colt had very well muscle defined, with each step it seemed like they rippled, his muscle dimple on his rear end was also very defined, and along his coat it glistened and was dotted with dapples. We then see Bubba, the now big bay colt was beautiful and sleek. He was pretty much legs, he resembled the great Riva Ridge today.

"He's looking great," I looked at Nicole. "I think we may have an upset." I said and they called for riders up and gave Nicole help into the saddle and I pat Bubba's rear and watched them walk away.

Jack walked up behind me and put his arm over my shoulders.

"I hear some people put some big bets on Prince." He said and smiled at me and laughed.

"Well, today they may get a big wealthier." I said and we made our way to the stands.

-Nicole's POV-

Prince was bigger and definitely more powerful than he was last year. It felt good, I had plenty of horse beneath me. I hope it's enough to beat I Will Remember and Rundown.

I looked behind me at Rundown, he was going to be inside of us. He had his head curled in to his chest as he trotted in his warm up. A head I saw I Will Remember being a hot head, he threw his head around and bucked, in some cases this was a bad sign, but with him. This was a sign of a soon to be amazing performance.

We stopped behind the gates and one by one, we loaded in. Prince and I being third, and Rundown being last. I Will Remember was first in. I quickly got ready for the gates to open and we all sat in silence.

Ring!

The gates clattered together and we all broke in a line, the crowd cheered as we ran past then for the first time.
I moved Prince out side of Settling Fog in third, the early leader is Midnight Line who was sprinting clear of the field as he lead the way into the backstretch. I looked behind us and saw Rundown and Red Alexei, and I Will Remember trailed us all in last. I turned my attention forward as Midnight Line started the fade rapidly and come back to the field, I pulled Prince inside of Settling Fog for a moment and Midnight Line slowly faded past us. We headed for the far turn I didn't make any move on Prince, I waited for Rundown and I Will Remember, then they came up beside Prince and we moved behind them. The turn started to come to an end and open the stretch, that's when I really started to work Prince. I urged him with my hands and he ran after Rundown and I Will Remember, quickly making up ground and running inside of then, the crowd cheered excitedly as we entered the stretch and the three of us ran along side each other. Then Rundown started to fall out of it and it left Prince and I Will Remember, I quickly reached back and hit Princes rear with the whip and at the moment it did, Prince put a neck out in front of I Will Remember and the crowds cheers dimmed a little as the we started the open on a I Will Remember stride for stride. I heard Joe Talamo trying to get I Will Remember to catch Prince, but there was no response and Prince continued to open on him, and the crowd was almost silent as the favorite seemed to struggle behind the 50-1 longshot. We crossed the finish line and the announcer boomed over the nearly silent crowd.

"What an upset in the Florida Derby as The Only Prince at 50-1! Runs away to win by four lengths! Wow, a astounding performance!"

I pulled Prince to a trot and turned him back to the stands, that was no longer silent, as plenty of Handicappers realized that Prince was their longshot winner. We stopped in front if the winners circle and I saw happy faces from Jack, Nathan and Michael. Michael grabbed Princes bridle and lead him into the circle for his photo and then moments later I hopped off and unsaddled and weighed in.

"Oh man, he's definitely got a chance for the Derby, he just beat Rundown and I Will Remember. Which if I may say, I pretty amazing." Michael said and pat Princes neck and lead him out of the circle and towards the stables.

I looked at Jack and Nathan who seemed to be discussing something eagerly and then turned their attention to me.

"His next start is going to be announced tomorrow. Since we have a few runners. So listen closely." Jack said and I nodded and walked back to the Jockeys Room.
