Prologue

I was twelve years old when Willamina came to live with us at Goodspring Plantation. It was the year 1847. We were close in age, but had nothing in common. I preferred to spend by time doing proper activities for a young lady, while Willamina had a much different idea of fun. I suppose her parents hadn't thought of raising her into a proper lady.

Goodspring Plantation was eight hundred acres of fields, forest, and beauty. My father had bought the land and built the house himself. He made a good life for us here on the outskirts of Atlanta. It was the perfect place for a child to grow up. My younger brother, Elliot spent his time exploring the land and roughhousing. I, on the other hand, was groomed into a model lady of society. I did what was expected of me and didn't talk back.

But things changed when Willamina showed up that fated year. One might say things changed for the better.

This book takes place in the 1800s. Therefore I display the characters' lives as accurately as possible for the time period. I do not romanticize the period, but portray it realistically.

The story has mentions of slavery, pregnancy, death, war, and abuse. It any of this is offensive to you, I apologize. It is not meant to be offensive, only meant to reflect like in the time period. It does not mean I agree with it or am supporting it, it just means that it happened during that time in the area so it needed to be mentioned. If historical accuracy is something that upsets you, I do not recommend reading this book. I do not say this to be rude, just to provide a warning.

This is a historical fiction novel. It's a fictional story that takes place during a real time in history. I put a lot of research into this in order to make sure it's as accurate as possible.

If you notice I have made any spelling or grammar mistakes, feel free to let me know in the comments, it's greatly appreciated.

The rest of the book is in third person and switches POVs.
