Jake Riley

The epidemic had gotten worse over the past few weeks after Katie's death. The enforcement outside of the quarantine had become stronger, while the inside forces had become weaker. Everyday more people got sick and everyday more people died but they were still no where near finding a cure.

Without any outside connections, soon everyone inside thought they were going to die. I tried to be positive for the couple kids that remained of Katie's class but soon I couldn't pretend anymore.

We were going to die.

"Y/n have you seen- are you okay?" Quentin asked. You turned your head to the side, quickly trying to wipe away the tears. Katie asked you to take care of Quentin on her death bed but you were starting to think you couldn't handle it anymore.

"I'm fine, Quentin. Are you looking for Jake?" The little boy nodded his head. Since Thomas had been contained, Quentin had founded a friendship in the older man. "I'm sorry buddy but I haven't seen him. Go play and if I see him I'll send him to you."

"Will you come with me? I can't play cards alone."

You looked up at Quentin and you saw Katie in him. From his brown hair, smile, and his eyes he was like a kid male version of his mother. You didn't know Katie before the epidemic but you didn't need to know her for a long time to know what a great person and mother she was.

In that moment you felt sorry that Quentin not only didn't have a father, but now he also didn't have a mother.

"Okay, sure. Go fish?" The little boy nodded, his brown hair falling in his face a little from the moment. "Okay, you go get the cards shuffled and ready. I'll just be another minute." Quentin nodded to you before scurrying down the narrow hallway into the lobby where everyone had been stuck.

You begin gathering your things from the ground, letters that Katie had left for you, when you heard footsteps coming towards you. At first you thought they were Quentin before you realized that they were much to heavy. "Jake." You whispered. "Quentin was looking for you."

"I already talked to him." You could tell by his voice that he was upset. "Y/n." When his voice cracked, a piece of your heart cracked with it. You couldn't bring yourself to look at him knowing it would only hurt you more.

"Who died?" The question slipped past your lips before you could stop yourself.

"Nobody died, y/n. At least, not yet." You finally turned your head up to meet his eyes. Your glossy ones met with his loving ones. At the beginning of the outbreak you thought that maybe there was something between the two of you, but as everything progressed nothing became of it.

The two of you were still friends, and still had moments, but after Katie you couldn't even think about falling for him. Especially because in seconds he could get sick and dead within hours.

"Yet?"

"He gave up, y/n. He gave up on working on the cure." Jake replied referring to the only doctor in the quarantine. "Lex is inside. He told me that... we aren't getting out. We are going to die here."

You sucked in a deep breath. You knew that you were probably never going to get out of here and that you were going to die, but just to hear it actually come out of his mouth made you sick. You will never see your family again or be able to do anything without the fear of getting sick.

"Y/n." His voice was soft and you fought not to look into his eyes. Eventually you glanced up and saw that his eyes were glossy, that they were full of pain. "I can't die without..." He paused. He took your hand him his, "Without you knowing that I love you."

You couldn't hold the sob back as it broke through your lips. He loved you. He loved you but you were still going to die. "Jake."

"I know. But I know you love me too and it's a hard situation. I know we are going to die." He cupped your face and lifted your face to meet his. "But even if this is my last day, I want to spend it with you."

He pulled your face to his and you could feel his lips ghost your own. It was a foreign feeling that instantly felt right. You were the one that ultimately closed the small gap between you two.

His lips were soft on yours and butterflies erupted in your stomach. Your head was fuzzy and you couldn't think straight as his lips worked against yours in a way you didn't think was possible. If it wasn't for the burning feeling in your chest, you probably would have stayed like that forever.

You rested your forehead against his own as you whispered the words you been aching to say to him for the past few weeks: "I love you too."

And with those four words, the fear in your heart eased a little as it was engrossed with love.
