Chapter 1: Plans

A laugh escaped a young woman's mouth as her best friend told her how she roasted some jerk that was rude to her. The women walked down the street chatting and laughing, enjoying each other's company and the sun shining on their backs. It had to be around 5pm, after school the girls always stop by the gas station to grab a slushie, it had become such a routine, that the gas station clerk recognizes them, and sometimes he gives them the slushies for free. Sometimes of course.

Sam and Katy had been friends since birth practically, they met through their parents, who had known each other from college, they couldn't remember if it was from them being in a group project or something along those lines, but it didn't matter now, because they were so alike, even their parents mixed them up a few times.

They were both about to finish High School, worried for the future as they didn't know what fate had in store for them. Sure they knew they would stay best friends, but they were more worried if their future careers would make them move away from each other.

Sam wanted to be a baker, but she was also on the fence on doing cosmetology.

Katy was always into the action side, so she wanted to get into criminology. Sure they're interests were different, but wouldn't their friendship be boring if everything was the same between them?

"You know," Sam started, taking a quick sip of her blue and red slushie, making her tongue a weird purple color, that showed a on her plump used to be pink lips. "If you did become a cop, I could give you free doughnuts." Sam smiled at Katy, making Katy raise a brow at her, smiling back.

"Why thank you, now when I'm sitting in a random parking lot, awaiting someone to speed so I can do something, at least I'll have your doughnuts."

"Well duh, what would you do without my baked goods?"

"Probably starve."

The women broke into a fit of laughter. Katy took a sip of her own slushie, a disgusting color mess of orange, green, blue, and red, making her tongue a sickly brown color, that just barely showed on her pink lips. Suddenly she stopped at the forests entrance, staring it down.

Something was in there, staring at them. Katy's body started shaking, something was beckoning her to go into the forest.

"Katy?" Sam's voice blared into Katy's brain, catching her attention away from the strange feeling. "You okay hon?"

"Yeah...Yeah yeah I'm uh," She paused glancing at the entrance, then back to her best friend. Releasing a sigh she walked towards her friend. "For the past few weeks I feel like there's something in that forest, almost calling to me...I know its crazy."

Sam smiled sympathetically at her best friend, she put a hand on her shoulder, "I've been feeling that way too. It's probably our sense of adventure calling."

Katy smiled nodding her head. They walked back to Sam's house, her parents were still working so they had the house to themselves.

Closing the door behind her, Katy's phone suddenly started ringing; digging it out of her pocket she looked at the caller ID. Tonya Walter, Katy's younger sister. Sliding her finger across the screen, the ringing stopped and she put the device to her ear.

"What's up butt-face?" Katy smiled answering, causing a chuckle from Sam in the kitchen-who was searching for some snacks for the two so they can work on their homework together. Or goof around, most likely the latter.

"You at Sam's I'm assuming?" Tonya's soft fragile voice rang.

"Where else would I be?" Katy replied giggling.

"Can I come over? I'm so bored!"

"Yeah come on over, make it fast or we'll eat all the snacks." Immediately after that Katy heard shuffling and Tonya had ended the call. Katy and Sam lived at least a few blocks apart, it wasn't too far, but a good enough distance to complain, as they felt they should be neighbors.

"Hey Katy?"

"Yes?"

"How about we go on a camping trip, we won't have school for the rest of the week, and I figured, since we both felt the need to go into the forest, thought it'd be a good escape and hopefully get that feeling satisfied."

"That, is the best idea ever! It's been like what, 8 years since we last did it?" Katy laughed, as the memories flooded her mind.

Sam laughed as well, remembering when she had fell into the lake and freaked out cause some seaweed felt like a snake against her leg.

"This time it can be just us, since we're old enough to be able to do it ourselves!" Sam suggested, "And Tonya can join if she wants."

"I can tell you now, she'll want to join." Katy smirked before shoving a handful of chips in her mouth.

"I'll ask my dad where the tent is, and we'll set out tomorrow." Sam smiled, excited to relive some childhood moments, as she grabbed her phone, ready to call her father.

"How long should we stay out there?"

"Oh geez like uh 3 days at most?"

"Perfect!" Katy shouted, jumping off the couch and pumping her fist in the air.

Sam walked away as she called her father, waiting for him to pickup and excitedly tell him the weekend plans.

The front door suddenly opened, and Tonya quickly walked in, and grabbed the snacks.

"Yo Tonya, wanna come camping with us tomorrow?" Katy asked her younger sister, already knowing the answer, but it was polite to ask.

"Of course! How long?"

"3 days at most."

"Awesome!" Tonya responded with a mouth full of chips.

Katy turned on the tv, ignoring the calls of her homework, beckoning to be finished, and not to be pushed aside until the morning it was due. But they had fallen on deaf ears, why worry about doing it now? She has the rest of the week to do it when she gets back from her camping trip.

"My dad said it's okay, and the tent is in the garage. We just need to pack." Sam responded as she joined the sisters on the couch.

"This camping trip is definitely going to be one to remember." Katy smiled between the girls.

Katy was right, but not in the way she thought.
