The Assignment

"Artie please talk to me" I said as he wheeled away from his locker ignoring me.

We hadn't spoken since I told him he was my first.  I was "dating" Puck when we hooked up.  What he didn't know was that we had broken up a week before I hung out with Artie.

"Artie, I have to tell you something and it's super important that you are the first to know." I told him as he turned into the choir room.  "Artie please." My voice quivering as I spoke.  Brittany made her way to me, "Are you trying to get him robot legs too Jamie?" she asked very seriously.  "No Britt, I just need to tell him something, but he won't talk to me." I said as she sat down next to Santana.

"Today's lesson is You.  I want each of you to come in front of the class and tell us something about yourself that nobody knows.  I know most of you are going to be reluctant about this, which is why anything said in here stays in here." Said Mr. Schue.  I knew exactly what I would tell everyone.  But I knew who i would tell it to as well.

"Mr. Schue can I go first?" I say raising my hand.  "Of course Jamie," he said before saying "Be nice guys."

I walked to where Mr. Schue had stood.  I took a deep breath.  "As most of you know, I am one of the few people at this school who haven't slept around with a bunch of people." I say looking at Rachel as she is my rock.  "But recently I found something out that I would like to share with you before I tell anyone else."  A few people looked closely at me waiting to hear the news.  "I'm pregnant."

A few gasps escaped the lips of my friends.  Brittany looked really confused.  "I know who the father is too, so don't worry. But I don't think he does. So..." I walk towards Artie as he looks at his hands. "Artie, It's yours." I say quietly.  He looks up at me with tears in his eyes.  "I'm so sorry." He says just loud enough for me to hear.  "You guys can go talk in the hall if you need to," Mr. Schue says.  "Thank you," I said a few tears threatening to leave my eyes.  I walked into the hall and sat down against the wall waiting for Artie to follow.  When he got to the hall he looked at me waiting for either one of us to say something.  "H- W- "  "I'm sorry, Artie" I said not letting him finish.

I was hysterical now crying my eyes out.  He held out his arms for me to sit in his lap.  I did and he held me.  He just held me.  He had one arm around my waist and the other holding my head.  I could feel him crying too.  "It's okay, Jamie, it's gonna be okay.  I promise." I had somehow cried myself to sleep.  Artie wheeled both of us back into the classroom.  Mr. Schue had given him permission to take me home.

He got half way down the hall before I woke up.  "Sorry, did I wake you baby?" He said softly.  "No, you didn't I could smell Sue's protein powder." I laughed.  I always did love when he called me baby.  "Do you think we should talk to someone, Artie?" I asked playing with the buttons on his shirt while he just wheeled around in the hallway.  "If you want to we can go to Ms. Pillsbury." he told me.

When we got to her office she was pulling little pamphlets out of a cardboard box and putting them on her desk.  He rolled in with me following closely behind.  "Ms. Pillsbury?" I asked, "Can we talk to you?"  "Sure Jamie, Hi Artie.  What's up?"  Artie did the talking thankfully, I wouldn't have managed.  "Do you have any pamphlets on teen pregnancy?" He asked her hoping she would just think it an opportunity to give us pamphlets.  "I sure do, and this is your lucky day because I just got a new shipment of pamphlets." She said as she rummaged through her drawers and the box.  She handed Artie 17 of them.

"Is there a reason you need these?" she asked Artie, not me surprisingly.  "Well-" Artie started but I cut him off "I'm pregnant." She looked at me wide-eyed.  She looked at Artie, and somehow, her eyes were even bigger.  "Well, congratulations to both of you, um, you two will make wonderful parents, um, okay, there are options like adoption, and , um-"  I looked at Artie before saying "I'm keeping the baby."
