Chapter 21: A Mean Curry!

"I get it, you must be the host club I've heard so much about." Haruhi's dad said after Kyoya made it known that the group of them knew Haruhi, they were invited in and were once again sitting around the table. "You certainly are a fine-looking bunch of young men. I'm not sure which of you I like best! What about you, dear?" He looked at the others, not giving Haruhi a chance to respond before he started talking again, "I'll tell you what. Why don't you boys go ahead and call me Ranka. That's the professional name I use at the transvestite bar I work at."

"Professional name, you mean like a stage name?" Honey asked.

"Exactly like that, Mitsukuni." Ranka said.

"Hold on, how did you know my name, sir?" Honey asked.

Ranka's smile deepened as he turned his attention towards Mori and Honey, "You two are third years, Mitsukuni Huninozuka, and Takashi Morinozuka." He then looked towards the twins, "You two are first years in the same class as Haruhi, you're the Hitachiin twins, but I'm not sure which one of you is which." He smiled, then looked towards Setsuko, "And you, you're second year Kuwata Itsuki. I've heard a lot about you." He said.

"What? So Haruhi told you about us?" Koaru asked.

"No, Kyoya told me about you two over the phone!" Ranka said.

Kyoya and Ranka turned to each other and pressed their hands together, the two of them smiling at each other.

"You know, you really are a beautiful person, Ranka." Kyoya said.

Setsuko sighed, "Why am I not surprised?" I wouldn't be surprised if he kept in contact with Kuwata as well.

"Kyoya?" Tamaki asked from his corner of gloom where he was sulking whatever happened between him and Ranka earlier.

"We've been trusted with the care of his precious daughter." Kyoya said. "It is only natural that we introduce ourselves and give periodic reports." Kyoya said. "Ordinarily that would be your job, wouldn't it?"

Setsuko watched as Tamaki flinched back from those words, falling towards the ground as if he were just shot by an arrow of some kind.

"I'm impressed the Club has such a capable president. But wait a minute, you're only the vice-president, aren't you Kyoya? I guess that president of yours is pretty much good for nothing, huh?"

"Haruhi, I like your dad already." Setsuko said, giving Haruhi a thumbs up while Tamaki got hit with nonexistent arrows.

Haruhi had a mix of anger and fear on her face, and she pushed herself up, "You never mentioned this to me, Dad!" She shouted, "Why didn't you say that you've been getting calls from Kyoya-senpai!?"

"What am I supposed to do Haruhi? You rarely tell me anything about school."

"So that makes it okay to talk behind my back? And stop growing mushrooms in other people's closets?!"

Setsuko turned from Haruhi to Tamaki, who was sulking in the middle of a newly grown mushroom patch.

"Haruhi, the thing about you is... you're cute even when you're angry!" Ranka exclaimed, moving from where he was sitting and wrapping his arms around the brunette as he gushed about how cute Haruhi was.

"I don't know what it is about him, but Haruhi's dad reminds me of someone." Hikaru said.

"It's Tamaki. He's a lot like Tamaki except I don't hate him." Setsuko said, watching as Ranka gushed over Haruhi.

"This explains why she's so good at handling the boss." Koaru said.

Haruhi suddenly pushed herself out of her dad's grasp and she started walking towards the door.

"Wait, Haruhi! Where are you going?!" Ranka shouted.

"The supermarket, alright." Haruhi said, not even hiding the annoyance in her tone. "I have to go shopping and I wanna do it by myself. So all of you just stay here and try to behave yourselves."

Before she stepped out of the door, Setsuko stood up and followed after Haruhi.

"I said I wanted to go alone, senpai." Haruhi snapped.

Despite offering to help Haruhi with dinner earlier, Setsuko understood that she needed some space, so she decided to stay where she was and let Haruhi have some alone time.

"Wait! We want to go to the commoner's supermarket!" Hikaru shouted, reaching after her only for Haruhi to shut the door on all of them.

"I wouldn't push it." Ranka warned. "Once she's made her mind up, she'll never change it. When she decided to wanted to go to Ouran Academy she did all of the enrollment paperwork by herself. While I respect her independent spirit, I wish she'd be a little more dependent on me sometimes. I remember back when she was eight, she didn't tell me it was bring your parents to school day. At first, I thought it was because she didn't like me, but it turned out she didn't invite me because she wanted me to have some time off. I hope you boys know how grateful I am. Since she's found you, she seems to be happier, she's enjoying herself. Wouldn't you agree, Suoh Tamaki?"

Tamaki perked up, bumping his head on the self above him before looking out of the closet with a dopy look on his face. "You know who I am?"

"Well of course I do, Haruhi's told me a thing or two about you. You're the Host Club's bumbling president, right?"

Setsuko let out a small laugh as Tamaki let out some kind of sound that made her think he was dying.

"Come to think of it, you're the one who didn't realize Haruhi was a girl until the very last moment. You're clueless, aren't you? Pretty pathetic." Ranaka put down his cup of tea and smiled at the others of the club while Tamaki went back to sulking I the closet. "Now that we've gotten all the introductions out of the way. How would you boys like to have a little fun?"

Oh dear, what's this going to lead to? Setsuko thought.

***

Turns out it led to the host club following Haruhi as she walked to the supermarket. "So this is what you meant by fun, huh? Following your daughter?" Setsuko asked.

"Yes! I call it the stalking game." Ranka said, giving the group a thumbs up.

"Not something you want to make a game out of." Setsuko said, feeling slight chills run up her spine. "Also, we're not doing a good job, we stick out like a sore thumb."

"In all honesty, I have a completely selfish reason for bringing you out with me. I want to be seen with a bunch of cute boys!"

"Sure enough, those two are definitely cut from the same cloth." The twins said.

It didn't take long for them to get to the supermarket, and they all walked in, immediately the hosts separated, Setsuko moved towards the vegetable idle, looking at what they had.

"So, does double-coupon mean I need two of them?" A voice mused beside her, and she looked to see Kyoya looking down at a coupon in his hand.

Setsuko snorted, "No, it means it doubles whatever coupon you have. A one-dollar coupon would become two dollars and so on."

"Ah, how interesting." Kyoya said, writing something down in a notebook he had in his hand. He put the coupon in his pocket and looked at Setsuko, "Are you perhaps looking for ingredients for dinner?"

"I was, but I don't think Haruhi's in the mood to have someone cook alongside her."

"What a shame, I was kind of looking forwards to tasting your cooking, even if it is terrible."

"Hah, your lack of belief in me is astonishing. I'll have you know I make one mean curry."

"Then I look forwards to tasting it."

Setsuko felt her cheeks warm up and she cleared her throat, "Yeah, okay, fine. Maybe I'll try to convince Haruhi to let me help, then."

It wasn't long before both Setsuko and Hauhi got what they needed for dinner and returned to the apartment. The two of them worked in the kitchen and soon everyone was sitting around the table enjoying a hotpot and some curry.

Setsuko watched as Ranka piled chrysanthemum on Tamaki's plate as the look of despair on his face grew more and more obvious as the pile got higher.

The dinner was filled with laughter and chatter. Setsuko sat at the table with half her plate full of some curry, and she slowly ate as everyone around her talked. She moved to grab some more curry when her chopsticks were met with another pair and she looked down, seeing Kyoya placing some veggies and meat from the hotpot onto her plate.

"Kyoya, what are you doing?"

"That amount of food is not nearly enough for a growing teen like you."

"I can assure you I'm eating as much as I need to. Besides, I'm not even that hungry."

"You haven't eaten anything since this morning. Don't think I didn't notice you skipping over a slice of cake. Besides, you're light enough as it is."

"And you know the exact reason why." Setsuko huffed.

"That fact aside, you still need to eat more to be healthy. Don't go starving yourself for the standards of others."

Setsuko clenched her fist, knowing that Kyoya wasn't going to let her refuse and the fact that he had a point, she just sat back and ate the food she was given, though she didn't clear her plate, and when Kyoya wasn't looking she passed the food onto his.

By the time the sun set, it was time for everyone to leave. Most of the other hosts got their own drives to come and pick them up, so Setsuko was sitting alone with Kyoya in his limo as they drove to drop her off.

In the silence between the two of them, her phone started ringing. Looking at the number, she quickly flipped it open, her relaxed and tired demeanor becoming alert almost immediately as she fumbled with the phone to press the answer button.

"Hello?" She was quiet as she listened to the voice on the other end, after a minute or two she nodded, "I'll be right there, thanks." She nodded and hung up the call, staring down at the screen.

"Everything all right?" Kyoya asked.

Setsuko looked up, "It's my brother... Kyoya we need to go to the hospital. Right now."
