Shooting AU (Elizona)

Eliza and Arizona are stuck together in the hospital during the season 6 shooting.  TW: shooting, blood, and surgery

"Sir, this is the pediatric ICU. You can't be here," Arizona says, stepping in front of Mr. Clark as he attempts to enter the pediatric ICU. Little does she know Mr. Clark has a gun.

"Get out of my way," he growls. "No can do," Arizona replies, standing her ground.

Before she knows it, a shot rings out and the nurses working the desk cry out in shock. Arizona crumples to the floor with a scream of pain, clutching her stomach, blood surrounding her. Mr. Clark runs past Arizona to the door to the stairwell. Meredith Grey, who was checking on a patient when the shooting began, is immediately crouching down next to her. She presses her hands to the gunshot wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

"Get me a gurney! We can't move her because the shooter is still in the hospital, but we need to get this bullet out. She is losing a lot of blood," Meredith orders.

A nurse fetches a gurney and lifts Arizona up, placing her on it. She is wheeled into an empty room and a scalpel and gauze are fetched as well as everything else the nurse and Meredith can round up.

"Eliza. I want Eliza," Arizona groans.

"I know, Arizona, but it's too dangerous for anyone to move around the hospital right now," Meredith soothes her friend.

"No. We are not doing this without anesthesia if Eliza isn't here. I need her," Arizona sobs. "Arizona..." Meredith sighs.

She knows her friend will die if the surgery isn't performed. Just then, Eliza comes running into the room.

"I'm here, shh baby. I'm right here," Eliza soothes, rushing to her girlfriend's side and taking her hand.

"How?" Arizona asks, her voice weak from the blood loss.

"I heard you scream and I came running. Now, please let Meredith do the surgery. I'm here now and I won't leave your side," Eliza says. Arizona nods weakly.

"Ok. I'm going to start now. Arizona, I'm so sorry, but this is going to hurt like hell," Meredith informs the blonde.

Arizona nods and squeezes Eliza's hand. Meredith uses scissors to cut off Arizona's top, leaving her in a bra, before using disinfectant on her hands and Arizona's stomach. Meredith then makes the first cut. Arizona screams in agony, tears streaming down her face.

"Eliza, you have to keep her quiet. The gunman could come back if he hears her screaming," Meredith urges.

"I know, I know. Arizona, honey, look at me. Just focus on me," Eliza soothes.

Arizona's eyes are full of pain as she meets Eliza's. Meredith starts to use her hands to find the bullet and check for internal bleeding, making Arizona scream again.

"Minnick shut her up!" Meredith orders.

"Baby, you need to be quiet. I know it hurts, but he could come back if he hears you. It'll all be over soon," Eliza says, attempting to soothe Arizona all the while muttering under her breath "Please pass out, please pass out."

Meredith removes the bullet, causing Arizona to scream again before passing out. Eliza sighs in relief, knowing Arizona will no longer feel any pain since she is out cold.

"The bullet didn't hit any organs and there is no internal bleeding. She's going to be fine, Eliza," Meredith informs Eliza as she stitches Arizona up.

"Thank you. I wouldn't be able to cope if I lost her," Eliza says, stroking Arizona's sweaty locks of blonde hair out of her face.

"You're welcome. You're good for her, Minnick. I haven't seen her this happy since Callie. She loves you," Meredith says, cleaning her hands on some towels.

Eliza blushes and looks lovingly down at her girlfriend. Whilst Arizona will no longer be in danger caused by her injuries, Eliza knows the coast is still not clear. There is still a gunman running around the hospital and he could come back at any given moment. For now, all Eliza can do is hope that the police are on their way to save them all.

Hours later, 18 people are injured apart from Arizona. 11 out of these 18, including Gary Clark, are dead. Eliza is sitting in a chair beside a hospital bed at Seattle Presbyterian, holding a still unconscious Arizona's hand waiting for her to wake up. A few minutes later, the blonde stirs and opens her eyes, looking around frantically.

"Hey, baby. It's ok. You're safe. Everyone is safe. It's over, it's all over," Eliza soothes.

Arizona whimpers, breaking Eliza's heart. She hates seeing Arizona like this, scared and no undoubtedly in pain from the gunshot wound and emergency surgery she has had to endure over the course of the day. Eliza crawls into the bed beside Arizona and gently, so she doesn't hurt Arizona, pulls her close.

"You're safe now. It's over," She soothes, stroking Arizona's hair soothingly to calm her girlfriend.

Soon after, the pair fall into a deep sleep, knowing that for the first time since the shooting occurred, they are safe and sound.
