“Welcome to Celebrity Spotlight, it’s an honor to have you,” The woman spoke earnestly, reaching out to shake wukong's hand as the director gave a thumbs up. “Can you please introduce yourself?”

“Of course,” wukong replied, turning to find the camera and winking. “My name’s sun wukong,” A pause. “Or you could refer to me as macaque's husband. If that’s easier,”

Nodding her head, she smiled. “So tell us, how did you two first meet?”

“Ah..that was interesting to say the least,” He tapped his chin, memories of them floating in the back of his head. “It’s a long story.”

“We have time,” She chided.

“A very long story.” he warned, smirking and pointing at the camera.

“I’m sure your fans would be dying to know,”

He laughed and sat up further in his seat, grasping her hands around his. “Okay,” And turning to the camera, “Don’t tell him I said anything~”

Grinning and playing along, “He’ll never know,”

“Right.” And then taking a breath. “Where do I start?”

--------------

Wukong was many things. Smart, intelligent, flirtatious, an asshole, he’s heard it all.

Amongst those things, he lived a very well off life– which he was grateful for, and was majoring in biology at a local university a province away from his hometown.

Everything was going rather well until the world stopped, Quite literally.

COVID-19 had taken them all by surprise, as his own professors had brushed it off as a mere virus

(which it was, but no one could predict at the time that it’d turn ugly), and he was forced back into his too close for comfort dorm, paired along with a stick in the mud roommate.

Stuck in his dorm, with nothing to do, he took to social media and scrolled mindlessly, until one day, everything changed.

Genius, playboy, billionaire, those words floated around him all throughout his life. He flaunted it more than he probably should, but that’s a topic for another time.

It was what was expected of him– To work in a lab abroad somewhere, overseeing things. The dream was laughable at best.

Wukong was many things. He did a lot of questionable things in his youth, but so did every 15 year old boy, he wasn’t much different.

However, if you had told someone that wukong was running a fanpage for his favorite Twitch streamer, they would’ve laughed in your face and told you you were insane, because he may be crazy but he wasn’t delusional.

Sure he had his fair share of Twitch, usually watching Animal Crossing or Overcooked playthroughs, but this, this was just an angry man practically seething at his monitor, shooting people left and right, whilst yelling on comms.

But alas, here he sat on his bed, listening to azure rattle off about whatever it was, earbuds plugged in watching as his streamer played one of his favorite games– Overwatch.

The streamer–macaque had just gotten play of the game, and wukong, being the proud owner of a 60k Twitter account, was screen recording it to upload it after.

Fast updates were important, it was a business running a page as he did.

Grinning, wukong blocked out the muffled noises in the background and watched as Macaque rolled his eyes: Bastards, really, if you main hanzo, what the fuck are you doing with your life?

After the play was over, he stopped the screen recording to switch tabs on his phone, only then looking up to see azure staring at him with such ferocity that  caused wukong to jump.

“Hello?” wukong tried, unplugging one earbud and wondering as to why he was standing centimeters away from him.

“Oh so now you pay attention? I’ve been trying to talk to you for the past 10 minutes!” He exclaimed, grabbing wukong by the collar and shaking him, causing his phone to fall on the floor.

“What?” he countered, giggling, “Didn’t you notice I wasn’t paying attention?”

Azure fumed. “How can I when every time I say something, you nod and hum?!”

“I always do that,” azure froze, looking confused. “Tune you out, I mean.”

“ Excuse me-”

“This gesture is charming, really, but can you let me down? I would rather not have my shirt stained from your grimey fingers.”

The other snorted. “They are not grimey.”

“I looked over 20 minutes ago and saw you practically inhaling those chips,”

Frowning, “I was hungry.”

“Yeah and I was watching a stream, now shoo,” wukong sighed, pushing azure back and grabbing his phone off the floor.

Untangling his other earbud which had fallen off, he was delighted to see a furious macaque cursing out the screen.

“Seriously, what the fuck. How am I toxic? It’s not my fault you’re ass,”

Wukong frowned. That didn’t seem right. Sure macaque was loud, but he was never toxic .

Not to anyone other than himself, anyway. Switching tabs again, his timeline was quickly filled with his mutuals freaking out and tagging him in tweets.

Returning to the stream and ignoring the mass amounts of tweets that were rolling in, he saw macaque laughing.

“Well chat- I guess that’s it for today. I didn’t have anything else planned, and I think we both didn’t expect this to happen.” He spoke easily, shrugging, as if he hadn’t just gotten banned from his favorite game. “I’ll see you guys soon, keep an eye out for me.”

Going to turn the camera off, macaque reached forward and smirked, flipping off the camera. “Oh yeah, and fuck you.” Leaving the chat to explode as soon as the stream ended.

Staring at the black screen, wukong rolled onto his side groaning into the pillow that was there.

“Can you not sound like a dying cat? I’m trying to study here,” azure deadpanned, shooting him a dirty glance from over his statistics textbook.

Voice muffled from the pillow, he opened an eye. “I still don’t understand why you even bother. Just cheat already! It’s not like your professors will be able to tell,”

“My values-”

“Don’t care!” And then groaning once more into the pillow, he curled into himself. “This is terrible.”

Cautiously, azure highlighted something. “..What your streamer lost a game or something?”

Pursing his lips, he sat up, daring to grab his phone, which was still lighting up. “No, he got banned from a game,”

Then the man had the audacity to snicker.

“Oh no , such a tragedy. How ever will you go on? Maybe now you can actually clean your side of the room!”

He didn’t sound as smug once wukong threw his pillow at him.

If you had told wukong a year earlier that instead of doing his research paper that was due that night.

he would be aggressively typing out a not- so- kindly worded email to Blizzard– one demanding them to unban macaque, he would’ve killed himself.

Not because he didn’t care, but because he doesn’t get attached. But here he was, squinting at the screen in front of him, not even bothering to  proofread before hitting send.

There goes his future career. But it wasn’t his fault. Was he supposed to just sit there on the sidelines and watch as this injustice racked all of Twitter? He had a reputation to uphold.

Very much known to him and thousands of others, he was the most prominent account there was, and right now he had to do something about it. What would people think of him?

And since when did wukong back down from a challenge? So, in doing this, he watched as the email went through, made a post about it, and went to sleep (because he actually did have a test the next day).

not on my watch.

[Attached is an image below, displaying a long drawn out email written by none other than him himself, demanding that maybe if there weren’t hackers (?) in the game, macaque wouldn’t have gotten mad, and that they really should update their communication system, because half the time Macaque couldn’t even understand what they were saying, which inevitably led to him getting so frustrated. And that everything was a misunderstanding]

Waking up and stretching his arms, Wukong reached for his phone for his daily social media purge.

Not the best way to start your mornings off– as based on countless labs, but he digresses. Responding to some of his friends and checking his grades, he inevitably checked Twitter.

Everything seemed in place at first, until in the middle of his feed was something macaque had said.

Which isn't entirely out of the ordinary– as he is quite active. But it looks like he replied to a comment? Brushing it off, wukong checked his dms, and it wasn’t until then that he realized that he had missed a crucial part of information, as all his dms read: OOMF CHECK YOUR REPLIES

Doing just that, he went to his replies and alas, at the top sat:

It wasn’t a big deal. It was fine. Macaque was just a normal guy, who streamed on the side. He didn’t even know who wukong was. The whole thing was entirely normal.

Blinking and checking again, wukong gaped once more. Because he honestly thought he might be hallucinating.

Hell who cares, he’s going to make it a big deal.

After that day, if it were even possible, wukong became even more interested in the streamer.

When he first started watching macaque, he had refused to use the chat, deeming that it was cringy and that it was below his standards.

But now? Call him a hypocrite because by god, was he the first message there every time. Even eventually opting to become a moderator.

Azure– unsurprisingly, wasn’t very thrilled at wukong's more than questionable spending habits.

One day in particular, they were heading to a cafe that was on campus– one of the only things that remained open for students, when he decided to confront wukong.

“So..wukong,” azure hesitated, walking forward and grasping the handle of the door, holding it open for wukong as they entered the quaint little coffee shop.

“You seem..happier these days,”

“Is that your way of telling me I’m not being moody?” He chirped back, walking up to the barista behind the counter, and shooting her a confident smile before ordering.

Sighing, but still following, “Sure, whatever. I’m just going to be upfront with you.”

“Oh?” The ginger glanced over his shoulder as the barista entered his order into the register. “Do tell ~ ”

Azure ruffled his collar, pulling at the hems. How should he phrase this? “I’m concerned about you.”

“Why az, I didn’t take you as the type to be so worrisome!”

“No, you idiot, I’m talking about your financial situation.” Frowning, wukong wasn’t following.

"You spent thousands of dollars on textbooks this year, and now apparently have bought something called ‘elevated chat’-- whatever that is? Not to mention the fact that you buy take out every other night.”

Paying quietly, wukong thanked the barista and went to take a nearby seat at a table, azure trailing him. “Yes,” He noted, nodding. “I did buy that,”

“You’re being financially irresponsible,” The other insisted, to which wukong only laughed.

“Oh az do you really not know?”

“Know what?”

“I’m a billionaire.”

Azure didn’t have his drink yet– he hadn’t even ordered, but he had come because the walking beanpole was complaining about being bored. But if he did have a drink, he would’ve spit it out, right then and there. Because what?

Azure had shared a room with wukong for 3 years at that point and he’s just now saying that he’s been rich this entire time? That would’ve saved him so much will power, time, and even effort.

“What?” He managed, practically gawking at wukong, who just pursed his lips.

“You didn’t know? I could’ve sworn I told you,”

Clenching his fists as the barista arrived with his drink, “You most definitely did not.”

“Oh!” wukong cried, cupping his hands around the warm cup and taking a sip. “Well I’m telling you now,”

“You really are an asshole, you know that right?”

“And proud.” wukong agreed. throwing azure's wallet back at him.

----------------

Just as macaque's day could get any worse, he had been called to take a shift at the last minute.

Usually, this wouldn’t have been a problem, but today he really couldn’t afford to deal with children running around and throwing clothes everywhere.

He had to stream later. Usually, he would brush it off and reschedule for another day, but today he couldn’t .

Not when he had promised to go live earlier. Not with his fan base which was a little too rowdy for their own good, even for him. He wouldn’t do that to them.

Grunting as he heard shuffling behind him, he lifted another stack of clothing off the ground and began to rehang it. Seriously, retail was no joke.

Everything they said was true. You had to deal with messed up clothes, rude customers, ungodly hours, and overall terrible pay.

The kids behind him only grew louder, eventually passing right behind him and practically sprinting through the aisles.

“Oi,” He called after one kid– a girl with pigtails, wearing overalls a size too big for her. “Stop running around.” He didn’t expect her to listen, but it was worth a try.

“Nu-uh, why should I listen to you Mr.” She squinted, “micaqui?”

At least she was trying to be respectful. Unlike a handful of children he’s dealt with. Dropping his stack of shirts he was supposed to be putting away, he squatted down next to her, spotting the other kid, beckoning him to come closer with his hand.

His voice was no louder than a whisper as he eyed them wearily. “Because, if you don’t, you’ll be trapped.”

“In the store?” The girl asked, eyes widening in horror as she tugged at her hair.

“Yeah, it took me years to escape,” He gestured to himself. “I haven’t seen my family since I was 4.”

Call him pessimistic but hey, it was worth it to see the color drain from their faces as they ran off to their parents, tears swelling their eyes.

He didn’t get paid enough for this shit.

-----------------

Arriving home, he ran to the bathroom, washing his face off with a wet towel and going to change into his pajamas. Sure, maybe not the best attire for a live stream with thousands of people, but they could deal.

Checking his monitor to make sure everything was running, he put his headphones on, adjusting them so his hair was under the ear holes.

He started the live shortly after, the chat rolling in with enthusiasm as usual. None of the comments really stood out to them, a mass array of them reading: YOU’RE LATE

Chuckling slowly to himself, he crossed his legs, opening Call of Duty.

“Yeah yeah, I know. Just be lucky you’re getting a stream at all.”

Another reply caught his eye.

“Have I gotten unbanned from Overwatch?” He frowned, he hadn’t actually checked , he had been too busy. “I was saving the reveal for stream,” He spoke, closing the tab and opening his email.

Not before setting the live screen to look at a screenshot of a cat first, he wasn’t going to be doxxed– not today at least.

And, sitting there brilliantly, was an email from Blizzard themselves. Scanning it quietly, macaque beamed. He had been unbanned.

He wouldn’t admit it out loud, but he really didn’t want to have to make another account, and go through the hell that was competitive mode.

-----------
@geo: DID YOU GET UNBANNED?

@quackquack: DON’T LEAVE US IN SUSPENSE BITCH

@mhio: did he get banned?? i’m confused
-----------

Pursing his lips, macaque ran his fingers through his hair, leaning into the microphone in front of him. “I’m unbanned you bastards. And no, I’m not playing it right now.”

He laughed. “I don’t want to piss them off more than I already did,”

And then, at the top of his chat, a reply glowed.

-------
@macaquesn1dickrider: you’re welcome~~
-------

He may be slow, but he’s not stupid, so instead of saying anything, he remained quiet, flashing a mean grin and switching back to Call Of Duty.

“Whatever. You guys up for some Black Ops?”

------------

The stream went relatively smoothly. Only small lags and glitches here and there, but that’s what happens when you’re streaming in your dorm room and relying on your shitty campus internet.

He couldn’t be too loud either, due to the thin walls. The soundproof foam he had placed hadn’t done much.

Macaque was, for lack of better words, intrigued.

He was aware of his presence on social media, even sometimes using his platform to give his followers resources for the virus and drawing attention to problems arising in the world.

In this, he was also aware of fan accounts.

Fan accounts existed for any semi influential person, but he had never felt compelled to really look at any of them. That was, until he saw the account that had gotten him unbanned.

Usually, he wouldn’t bat an eye, but for one of his followers– fans , to go out of their way to do something like that for him,  it was oddly endearing.

Overwatch had been the first game he streamed, and other than that he actually enjoyed playing it, so it meant alot to him.

He was more disappointed than he let on when his screen had gone black and the game shut off.

So, against his better judgement, he looked at the account. He had only meant to look at recent things, but as always, he fell into a rabbit hole, looking through the entire thing.

Macaque hadn’t expected this guy to be so blatantly obvious about the way he felt about him. The worst part? It was funny, against all odds, he was laughing.

Wukong had been drunk when it happened.

He didn’t remember much, just remembering how azure had reprimanded him for drinking on a school night, to which wukong had shouted back: We take online classes, you utter stick in the mud.

So, needless to say, he wasn’t in the most coherent mental state when he did it.

But then again he was bored out of his mind and didn’t have anything else to do. Besides, millions of people do this to their favorite celebrities every day.

Over the course of the past week, wukong had gained around 30k followers, now leaving his account at 90k. His tweets had blown up, causing him to join the trending page.

It was insane. If he were a little bolder, he’d openly promote it on his personal Instagram, wanting to even out the number.

But he didn’t. His tweets had really blown up when people found out macaque had liked one, which left him reeling . He shouldn’t feel as giddy as he does.

He was about to DM some random celebrity, when it happened.

His vision was bleary, and it was hard to make anything out, but he could hear. His eyes peeled apart in shock as the relentless dinging sound from his phone filled the dark room, leaving him to quickly mute it.

Someone was liking his posts–that wasn’t new.

But when checking, it was macaque?

His heart plummeted.

Wukong was good looking, he knew that to be true. He was unabashedly confident and would flirt with any object, as long as it could move and talk. He was charming, and took pride in it.

Yet here he was, blushing through the roof as his celebrity crush liked 2 more of his posts, like some stupid teenager.

Maybe that’s what prompted him to try the one thing that would avalanche into his future.

(3:45am) you want me SO bad

Wukong knew he wasn’t going to read it. Hell, he even had a setting on so he deliberately wouldn’t see what people sent him.

Tossing his phone to the side, he threw himself onto his bed, allowing his eyes to close as his head hit his pillow.

Ding.

He shot up, sleep suddenly forgotten.

(3:55am) i really don’t

(3:56am) oh my..well i wasn’t expecting you to actually reply, but now that you’re here it seems i was proven correct ~~

(3:56am) you didn’t prove shit.

(4:44am) anyway i looked through your account..do you really think my voice is hot?

(4:45am) fishing for compliments are we?

(4:48am) awhh how could i say no to that? fine, the answer is yes

(5:07am) whatever, this was a one time thing

(5:10am) it’s been an honor

(5:10am) ..right. night xiao

(5:11am) night mac ~~~

---------------

It was in fact, not a one time thing.

Over the next couple months, they’d just talk. For hours. It wasn’t anything substantial, not at first.

But wukong soon came to understand that macaque was working 2 jobs, and that he wanted to do streaming full time.

Macaque learned that “xiao” wasn’t wukong's real name after making a bad joke about it, to which wukong relished.

He also found out that wukong was a university student as well, and despite all the red flags and everything parents told their children not to do on the internet, they agreed to meet up.

Apparently, wukong had been running a 100k fan page for someone who lived 20 minutes away from him this entire time.

He wasn’t sure what the proper attire for meeting an online “friend” was– he can call macaque that right? But he decided on a sweater and some jeans.

He also wasn’t sure what he was expecting. Macaque was very loud and brash in his streams, not at all hesitating to call someone out when need be.

But the man who sat in front of him looked like he had never done anything impure in his life– which was false , as wukong had recently discovered.

But he was beautiful.

His mess of jet black hair was down and parted on the side, and he was wearing a tight graphic tank top paired with leather pants. Wukong forcefully had to stop himself from drooling.

“Hi,” wukong blurted out, words spewing from his mouth without him really intending for them to leave. “I’m wukong,”

Rolling his eyes, macaque grinned, taking a sip of his coffee. That’s right, the same coffee shop wukong had dragged azure too only months before.

“I know,”

The silence was deafening.

“My roommate almost killed me on the way here, you know,”

His brows furrowed, “What? That azure guy? Why?”

Wukong grimaced, faking sorrow as he took a bite of his bagel. “He practically begged me not to meet you. He went on and on about how there are predators out there and everything,”

Macaque nodded. “And?”

“I told him that I was pretty sure you weren’t a 50 year old man who plays Valorant.”

Suppressing a laugh, macaque nodded solemnly, pointing at wukong. “Hey- don’t make fun. There’s totally 50 year old guys who play Valorant.”

“Yeah, yeah, that’s why you win every game,” He agreed, looking around the room, anywhere other than the soft blue eyes on him.

“I thought you didn’t like Valorant,”

“Oh no I don’t,” wukong agrees easily, watching as macaque gives him a look . “But I still watch you stream it,”

“Why?”

“Why?” wukong repeated cockily. “Because I’m the number 1 macaque dick rider obviously!”

Wukong was delighted to see the reaction the older one gave as his face shifted into a dark red before he reached forward and gave wukong's shoulder a punch.

“Don’t say shit like that,” He groaned, hiding his face behind his cup of coffee.

“Why not ~ It’s true ~ “

“I really thought you were going to be one of those guys– the ones who talk big games but then get shut down once and give up, but it looks like I was wrong.” macaque raised a brow, smirking slightly.

“My my, you thought very lowly of me then,” The ginger gasped. “I haven’t even really started flirting with you!”

That left Macaque's mouth hanging open. “ What? ” wukong just looked at him amused. “What have the past 3 months been then?”

He shrugged. “I was teasing mostly. I didn’t think you were interested– or would be for that matter until you actually met me, and based on that, ” he motioned to Macaque's pink tinted face, “I can see I wasn’t far off.”

“Oh fuck you.”

And for once, wukong actually felt excited for what the future had in store for him. Sure he had run a meaningless fan page that he started almost a year ago.

That was for fun. No one could have foreseen this outcome. It was taking everything in him not to scream like a child who was just handed their favorite toy.

So he just smiled. Unguarded. One that macaque could easily see through, because he couldn’t find it in himself to care.

“ wukong,” macaque started looking at him, eyes pinched upwards now too as a soft grin fell over his lips. “You should stream.”

“Excuse me?”

“You should steam,” he stated, gauging his reaction as he bent backwards, crossing his legs underneath him. Wukong didn’t know if that was supposed to be comfortable.

Now it was wukong's turn to make a face. “Stream what? I don’t play any games,”

“That’s the joy in it,” macaque waved a hand dismissively, “You play whatever you want. You play, chat, and get paid . Shit’s amazing,”

“Ah, inspiring as always,”

“I try,” macaque retorted, lacing his fingers over his knees.

Wukong could tell macaque was about to make a change of conversation, but he still felt oddly prompted from before. And, well, macaque was too cute to ignore.

“Should I actually try? To stream I mean,”

Macaque shrugged lazily, “If you want,”

A question laid on the tip of his tongue.

“And make my fanbase hate you?” wukong questioned, already foreseeing the outcome.

“I want to see your ass mope around in Minecraft or something, so yeah, it’d be fun,”

“Is that an innuendo?” wukong smirked, scooting closer to macaque, who only inched away slowly.

“What do you think?”

“mac! You amaze me really!” He exclaimed, clasping their hands together.

“Shut up, peach.”
