The Acapateco who resided in the Huruk forest made a revolt in 1580 and San Miguel was granted independence in 1600. In 1920, the first democracy was started by an Acapateco called Miguel De La Mendoza but the time period between 1600 and 1920 was darkened by constant civil wars and crime, in 1960 Miguel De La Mendoza died at the age of 80 and citizens chose Luis Sifuentes as the president.
