Chapter 14: Bonding

Remus was in possession of all he required, and Betelgeuse was ready to return home with £134 in his pocket, which he planned to give to Remus. He took a few deep breaths to settle himself a little after being out for a while which caused a small sensory overload, but overall, it was a fantastic excursion, and he felt incredible knowing that he was saving an innocent youngster from a horrific and tragic life, one that was similar to his own, if not worse. Betelgeuse walked out of the shop and noticed a sign for the toilets, so he went in and found an empty stall. With a snap of his fingers, he was back to his old self, and with another snap of his fingers, he was back home, eager to make sure Remus was safe and happy. He checked the time in his room and noticed that it was just after 12:30 o'clock. He hadn't realised he'd been out for two hours. His breathing became more rapid, so he calmed himself by playing with some blu tac he had on hand before creeping into the guest room and smiling when he found Remus soundly sleeping. Remus must've heard something since he moaned and stretched. As soon as his head hit the pillow and his eyes closed, he was asleep again.

"Aww. Are you a sleeby boi?" Betelgeuse asked jokingly, and the teen awoke again, chuckling and nodding. "How are you feeling?" the demon asked, sitting next to and stroking the teen's head.

"I'm good!" Remus stretched and tumbled out of bed.

"You want some food?"

"Brunch sounds good!"

"What is brunch? Can you teach me how to make it? Is it a British thing?"

"Nope! Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch!"

"Oh right! It all makes sense! yeah." Betelgeuse laughed as he took Remus out of the room and into the kitchen.

"Oh god! Last night, I forgot to take my injection!" Remus was in a panic.

"Don't panic! I packed your injection! Just do it now!" Betelgeuse stated as he took out a needle bin, and an injection pen from his bag.

"Oh! Thanks!" Remus grinned and prepared his jabs. He sat on the kitchen side and lifted his shirt and injected the testosterone into his tummy before discarding them into the needle bin and taking his Thorazine and lithium tablets.

"Woah! I wouldn't have been able to do that at your age!" Betelgeuse praised.

"Thanks!"

"It's no issue. You'll be in my custody legally soon enough!"

"What?"

"Oh! I'm so sorry I forgot to tell you! I didn't want you to end up in another foster family, so I chose to adopt you. That is, if you'd like it!"

"You're kidding, right? That would be fantastic! Thank you!" Remus screamed and held the demon firmly, warmly thanking him.

"It's no problem! You do not have to address me as father. Just call me by my name!"

"Could I call you 'Uncle'?" Remus enquired.

"Yeah. Call me whatever you want!"

"Thank you, a bunch. You're the greatest!"

"Thanks!". They ended the hug, and Betelgeuse got to work cooking brunch for him and Remus, enlisting Remus's assistance. The two collaborated to prepare a Full English Breakfast. Betelgeuse was doing the bacon because Remus had informed him that it spat the oil and he didn't want him to get hurt any more than he already was. Remus also taught Betelgeuse how to make fried eggs without burning them. Somehow. The teen prepared sausages, beans and toast for everyone, and they both served brunch, the egg on toast with sausage, bacon and beans on the side and a glass of fresh orange juice. Betelgeuse yelled for Jacques and Ginger to join them at the dining room table, and they all sat down and tucked in, making compliments about how good it tasted.

Remus was sitting there, staring at his plate. Everyone in the room turned to look at him as a tear ran down his cheek and landed on the table.

"Rem! Is there a problem? Betelgeuse rushed up to him and hugged him. Remus lifted his head and shook his head. He was smiling and crying happy tears. "What is it, Rem, honey?" Betelgeuse inquired, encouragingly.

"I've never had a decent meal or love like this before." he replied, wiping away some tears.

"I'm sorry, Rem. We're all here!" The demon said as he sat back down.

"T-thank you!" Remus said this before eating his food and enjoying the sensation of having a full stomach rather than an empty one. Betelgeuse was relieved that he hadn't hurt Remus or made a mistake, and he was glad he was comfortable in his home. After everyone had finished eating, Remus began stacking everyone's plates and carrying them to the kitchen. Before he could do anything else, Betelgeuse ran up to him and gently grabbed him from behind.

"And what do you think you're doing, mister?" he asked, kissing the top of his head.

"What about the washing up?" Remus replied.

"In this house? Nope! You are not required to do anything while in my care unless specifically requested to do so. Okay?"

"Really? Do you really mean it?" Remus was unsure whether he meant it or how to respond.

"Yeah! Yes, I mean it." Betelgeuse smiled. Remus immediately pushed the dirty plates to the side and turned to embrace the demon tightly. This caught the demon off guard, and he jumped a little from the sudden contact before returning the cuddle. "Are you okay?" he asked sweetly, even though he knew the teen was fine.

"Yeah!" Remus smiled.

"Thank you!"

"For what?"

"Everything!"

"Don't worry. I know your experience.". Remus smiled and looked up into the demon's eyes with pure love and affection. Betelgeuse gently kissed the teen's brow before letting go. Remus snatched him back and encircled him in a hug, chuckling before letting him go. "Why don't you go watch TV or do whatever you want?" Betelgeuse recommended.

"Okay!" Remus entered the 'dying' room and sat on the sofa after turning on the television. Despite the fact that he could have just used his powers, Betelgeuse began to wash the dishes. He came into the room to offer Remus a drink after they were finished, but grinned when he found Remus curled up in a little ball, head on the armrest, looking as calm as could be! Betelgeuse laughed quietly as he sneaked over to the youngster and took a blanket from a basket in the corner of the living room, draping it over him, nestling him in and gently kissing his forehead. He brought the empty basket to the guests' room and placed it on the bed. He neatly folded up the tops and jeans after emptying the bags, as his mother had taught him. He recalled this lesson since he was disciplined severely every time that he did anything remotely incorrect. He shook off the bad parts of this and placed the clothes on the basket's left side. The demon did the same with the pyjamas and layered the slippers on top. He placed the socks and boxers next to them, on top of the joggers and hoodie. The toiletries were placed in the upper right-hand corner, alongside the trainers. He summoned an envelope and placed the cash inside before placing it on top of everything, close to the toastie, which he had wrapped in an insulating bag to keep it warm and a cool bag to keep the frostino cold. He summoned a roll of wrapping paper and wrapped the present up as neat as he could, but it did look a little scruffy. As a kid, he never got gifts so never learned how to properly wrap them.

Betelgeuse needed something to go with the welcoming present, such as a card. Betelgeuse grinned as he materialized a piece of paper and a blue pen. He pondered about what to write. Perhaps something along the lines of 'Glad to welcome you as my new son.' No, that's too forward. Maybe just 'I love you!' No, it was far too brief. Maybe something like 'Love you' on the front, followed by 'Dear Remus, welcome to my home. I love you, Uncle Bj.' Betelgeuse nodded and scribbled it down before folding the card. He stacked it on top of the other items in the basket and left it on the bed. He walked into the living room to check on Remus, wondering whether he had awoken. He was still curled up, soundly sleeping, which made Betelgeuse grin. He sat on the sofa next to Remus; his gaze fixated on the sleeping kid. He appeared to be peaceful and comfortable, and Betelgeuse didn't want to wake the sleeping adolescent. He awakened after around 5 minutes and shuffled over to the demon, resting his head in his lap. This was by far the calmest he'd ever seen this youngster.

"Hey!" Betelgeuse grinned as he stroked the adolescent's hair. "Are you feeling okay?" he inquired softly.

"Mhmh!" Remus muttered, flopped over, and smiled right into the demon's eyes. His left eye was the exact same colour as Betelgeuse's hair. The more the demon thought about it, the more he realised that the colours his eyes changed to were precisely the same as his own hair depending on mood. He shook his head and grinned down at the adolescent, dismissing this as a bizarre coincidence. "Uncle Bj?" Remus inquired.

"What's up?"

"Could you possibly give me a tour of your home?" He asked.

"Sure. C'mon!" Betelgeuse remarked as he stood up and snapped his fingers. The striped demon was now dressed in a trench coat and a hat with the word "GUIDE" written boldly on the front. He shot into the air and then came to a halt in mid-flight. He grinned as he held out his arms and took a big breath. Not a happy grin, not a false smile, but a wild, insane smile. He spun around, facing Remus, before removing his hat and making a dramatic bow, resting at his feet. "The afterlife's leading bio-exorcist, at your service!" He stood up and re-applied his hat. Remus chuckled at how much of a goof ball this grownup demon could be. "Something amusing, Mister?"

"You're such a goofball!" He chuckled, and Betelgeuse moved over to him, gently lifting his chin to look him in the eyes, making sure he didn't make him feel trapped or intimidated. Remus continued to snicker to himself, while Betelgeuse pretended to be enraged.

"Do you find this amusing? How would you want to end up with a sprained ankle?" he said, "because I can make it happen. Or worst-case scenario-"

"What?"

"You'll be tickled to death!" Betelgeuse replied, reaching out his hands to him.

"You'd never do it!" Remus took a step away from him as he scowled at him.

"Give it a shot! Child!" Betelgeuse gave him a mischievous but playful glance. Remus weighed his options: 'stop laughing and pay attention' or 'run as if his life depended on it.' He chose the second option and turned to flee in a joking manner, sensing that Betelgeuse was merely playing. He was picked up and placed on the sofa by the stronger male in a kind, non-restraining manner. Betelgeuse held Remus's arms weakly over his head so he could move about while his other hand slid under his shirt and softly brushed over his torso. Remus broke out laughing and began flailing his legs around like a child.

"I wouldn't dare, would I?" Betelgeuse teased, and Remus squirmed around, humorously asking that the demon would stop. Even though he could easily escape, Remus decided to play for a few minutes, loving it more than working.

"Uncle Bj, please stop now!" Remus giggled after having enough, and Betelgeuse chuckled and stepped back, understanding the youngster had had enough. He helped him up and lovingly kissed his forehead.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah! Thank you for listening to me!"

"Hey. Nobody deserves to be overlooked!" Betelgeuse stated this while hugging the teen. "You know something'? You're strange!!"

"No! You're the strange one!" Remus laughed.

"Fine, I'm the strange one; you're the cute one!" Betelgeuse told him, and the adolescent pouted, his arms crossed.

"I'm not cute!" he argued.

"Are too!"

"w-whatever! Now, what about the tour?"

"oh! Right, yeah. Come on" Betelgeuse remarked before showing Remus around his home. He showed everything in every room and made Remus feel at ease. "And finally, we have your bedroom!" he said as he entered the spare room. When Remus noticed the wrapped thing on the bed, he tilted his head to the side like a curious puppy. Betelgeuse sat down on the bed and motioned for Remus to join him. He placed the box on his knee and waited for him to read the card.

"Aww! Thank you, Uncle Bj! I love you too!" Remus cracked a grin. He unwrapped the gift and grinned from ear to ear as he rummaged in the basket in awe. He thanked and hugged the demon passionately. He opened the sealed envelope and counted the money. "I can't accept this amount of money, Uncle!" Remus said and attempted to hand it over to the demon.

"Remus, you've deserved this for years! Spend it wisely!" Betelgeuse stated as he placed the envelope with the cash in Remus's palms and closed his fingers around it.

"Uncle I- thank you" Remus stated as he warmly hugged Betelgeuse.

"Hey! It was nothing. Please quit praising me! "The demon said, and the youngster laughed. The youngster grabbed the food and drink from the bag and immediately dug in, relishing the delectable taste of the toastie.

"Would you like some?" he inquired.

"No, thank you. I've already eaten mine." Betelgeuse declined politely.

"Thanks!" When Remus saw the demon's expression change to a false furious expression, he smiled.

"Uh oh! I believe someone needs another tickle session!" Betelgeuse grinned before gently raising Remus's arm above his head, taking his food and placing it in the basket, and lightly tickling his armpit, causing him to softly giggle. Remus tickled the demon's side with his free hand, who giggled and wrapped his arms over his tickle spot. Both grinned as they glanced at each other. Remus grabbed his toastie back and devoured it before sipping his drink, leaning into Betelgeuse, who placed his arm around him and pulled him deeper into the embrace, kissing the top of his head. They agreed to spend a leisurely day together and binge watch some Hugh Jackman movies, even though Betelgeuse would rather watch a scary film. However, there were some violent sequences in X-men, which made it a little more pleasurable for him. Remus was smiling as much as he could while he watched, laughing every time Logan failed to flirt with Jean or insulted someone. The way his face lit up made it all worthwhile for Betelgeuse, who hugged Remus close to him, kissing his forehead on occasion.
