Update
Steven has been seeing people who don't exist since he was ten. They were all in his head. Years later, he never married because he was always seen as a wacko. Because he's lonely, and Thomas isn't that much company, since he only helps him with farm work, Steven wants to adopt. So to get the company he has always wanted as well as a family, he goes to pick up Anne from the orphanage and he takes her home. He then sets these odd rules, so that she can be saved from these people who haunt him, because he really does love her like a daughter. So, in his mind, the "people" threaten to kill Anne, and Steven begs them not too. So in order for to her to stay alive, the people give him three easy rules to follow.
One- no interaction with Thomas
Why? He knows that Steven isn't exactly good in the head. And if Thomas says anything that will put the smart girl in wonder, than she can make those people go away by getting him mental help
Two- every Sunday, he must chop fifty pieces of wood and make a fire down by the lake where they live, so that he can talk to the "people" about his progress
Three- if he doesn't follow any of these rules, he must kill her himself.
