In a country called Etra, where couples are matched together by the government, Lyla's desire to be with the man she's loved since childhood could get her in a lot of trouble. Lyla is paired with a different boy in her grade. James, a rich playboy with more popularity and power than he knows what to do with. Still desperate to maintain her relationship with Max in secret, she and James struggle to get along, as her clear reluctance to act as his partner frustrates James. But when she and James come to some mutual understanding, an odd type of friendship begins to blossom between them. Meanwhile, Lyla's relationship with Max becomes more strained, despite their attempts to find ways of being together. Complicating things further, it seems as though James is harboring genuine feelings for Lyla, and his unwillingness to let Lyla go is fueled by more than just their government-assigned partnership together. Lyla finds herself in an impossible love-triangle, and with outside influences trying to come between her and both of the men in her life, she fights to make sense of her now complicated feelings as she navigates the jealousy of her assigned partner and the boy she thought she should be with.
