Meleoreona looked at Y/N as he ate the meat that they had hunted and cooked. She suddenly said, "You're going to join the Magic Knights." Y/N stopped as he was about to take another bite of the the meat and looked back at her, "What? I thought you hated the Magic Knights because they were annoying." Meleoreona said, "I've had a bad feeling about the future of the kingdom. And whether I like it or not, I'm a member of the royal family. That means I have a responsibility to protect the people. However, I'm not sure that I can just join the Knights without beating everyone up and drawing attention. That's where you come in. You're young and unknown. It'd be easier if you went in my place. You've also got the power to protect others and since you're just barely fifteen, it wouldn't be suspicious if you took the entrance exam." Y/N thought for a moment before letting out a sigh, "Fine, I'll join the stupid Knights." Meleoreona laughed as she ruffled his hair, "Excellent. Not that you ever had an actual choice in the matter."

Y/N grumbled as he ate the apples he brought and walked down the streets of the capital. He was extra annoyed because people kept calling him a kid because of his height, 'I get it. I'm short. I don't need you people pointing it out to me.' Y/N suddenly smelled something delicious and went to the stall where he smelled it. Y/N let out a happy sound, "Broiled purple snake. I'll take one!" "I'll take one!" Y/N turned to see a gray haired boy standing next to him. Behind the boy was a taller, black haired boy. The vendor gave them the snake and they paid for it before they started eating. Y/N smiled, "Ah, the taste never gets old." The gray haired boy said, "It's really delicious." The gray haired boy turned again and started examining Y/N before shouting, "What's a kid doing here?" Y/N became irritated, "I'm not a kid. I'm Y/N L/N, a fifteen year old." The gray haired boy was silent for a minute before yelling again, "Wait, you're the same age as me, but shorter!?!?" In response to the comment, Y/N socked the boy in the stomach. The taller boy said, "Sorry about this idiot. I'm Yuno and this is Asta. He's just not used to someone our age being as short as him." Y/N huffed and left with his snake in hand. He had had enough of people calling him short. Asta got back up and waved good bye, which Y/N ignored. Y/N wandered around again until it was time for the exam. As Y/N went to get registered, he groaned when he saw that he was behind Asta and Yuno. Asta smiled at him, "Hey, it's you again. I'm Asta from Hage. Sorry about before. Normally everyone's taller than me so I was surprised to see someone shorter than me. No offense. Where are you from?" Y/N said, "I don't really come from anywhere. I never stay in one place for too long." Asta was about to continue talking, but he had to be registered. Y/N let out a sigh of relief as Asta left and he get himself registered. He joined the rest of the candidates in the arena that was filled with anti birds. Y/N had heard that they were a special type of bird that attacked people with low magical power. He saw that they avoided him and Yuno, but they were attacking Asta violently, causing Y/N to laugh. Y/N went to the front of the arena, where the captains where to appear. Once the captains arrived, announcing the start of the exam. The captain of the Golden Dawn, William Vangeance, was announcing the exams. Vangeance used his magic to summon a tree whose roots turned into brooms that were given to each of the examinees. He explained that they would first be tested on their broom riding skills because it was a necessary skill for Magic Knights to have. Y/N got on his broom and started riding it high in the air rather easily. He saw that Yuno was also able to ride it high as well, but some of the candidates couldn't control their brooms at all. Y/N looked down to see that Asta hadn't even gotten off the ground. Y/N thought, 'Huh, I figured he didn't have much magic power if he was attacked by so many anti birds, but even a child should have the power to at least lift a broom off the ground.' Y/N went to Yuno, "Hey, is your friend going to be alright?" Yuno said, "Yeah, he'll be fine. Don't worry about it." Y/N said, "Fine. If you say so." The two of them watched as another candidate began talking to Asta before flying off. Y/N deadpanned the man, 'He's obviously just using Asta to make himself look better.' Just as the man flew off, two of the other candidates began charging magic attacks that seemed to be aimed at Asta. The captains noticed this. Yami, the captain of the Black Bulls, said, "The hazing's starting. Looks like they're aiming for that kid that can't fly." Nozel, the captain of the Silver Eagles, said, "It's fine. The hazing is a natural part of the exam." Fuegoleon, captain of the Crimson Lion Kings, said, "Yes, a Magic Knight must be able to defend themselves in any situation. This is just another part of the test." As they finished talking, the candidates attacked Asta, who was surprised by the sudden attacks. Before he could do anything, the attacks were stopped. As the smoke cleared, everyone could see Yuno using his wind magic to overpower an attack and Y/N wielding a sword to slash through the other spell. The two candidates that had attacked where shocked and fell on their own brooms. Yami said, "Wow, those two reacted fast." Nozel narrowed his eyes, "Wait, I think I know that one with H/C hair." Yuno and Y/N turned to each other. Yuno said, "Thanks, but I didn't need the help." Y/N said, "Well, you got it so be grateful. No one else would have even offered to help him. By the way, I see that we have something in common." Yuno glared at him, understanding what he meant. Charlotte, captain of the Blue Rose Knights, gasped, "Wait, those two have four leaf grimoires!" The other captains stood up and saw that what she said was true. The two boys had their grimoires out to cast their respective spells, revealing the four leaf clovers of the cover. Vangeance was the most surprised, "Wait, that shorter boy. He uses Sword Magic!" The other captains noticed it as well. Nozel said, "Wait, I remember now. It's that boy that Meleoreona brought to the capital all those years ago. Fuegoleon, why didn't you tell us that he would be taking part?" Fuegoleon said, "I was unaware of it. My sister never told me." The captains settled back down as the exam continued. Y/N had very little trouble with passing the rest of the tests that they were given. Yuno also seemed to be doing well. However, Asta had failed at every single test since the beginning. Meanwhile, Fuegoleon had begun telling the other captains about Y/N and how his older sister had begun training him while he was still young. Soon, it was time for the final test. Vangeance said, "The final part of the exam will be a fight between candidates. You need only battle once. Keep in mind that losing your battle does not disqualify you, but it would make you less favorable, so be sure to do your best. Now, begin!" Y/N began looking for an opponent and caught sight of Asta's fight against the candidate that had been using him. The man, named Sekke as Y/N would eventually learn, put up a spell that acted as defense and offense, but Asta sliced through it. Asta defeated Sekke in one hit, shocking everyone. Asta began to say that he was going to work hard and become the Wizard King. Several of the candidates said that it was impossible. Y/N said, "Well, I guess it's improbable, but not completely impossible." Asta turned to Y/N and gave him a large smile. Y/N was then tapped on the shoulder. He turned to see a noble. The noble said, "If you really think that commoners can succeed in such an endeavor, what about challenged me?" Y/N accepted the challenge and won easily by smacking the noble to the wall with the flat side of his sword. The exam ended. The candidates lined up. Asta gave Y/N a pat on the back, "Thanks for the support back there. You know, your the only person outside my church family that said that I could become the Wizard King." Y/N said, "I never said that you could. I said that it wasn't impossible. That does not meant that I believe in you, well, not completely." Asta grinned, "Well, I'll take it." The boys turned back to see the captains begin calling the numbers and selecting new members. Yuno went up and all the captains offered a position in their squads. Yuno went with the Golden Dawn. When Asta approached, none of the captains raised their hands, but Yami began lecturing Asta about his strange power. When Asta said that he would never give up on his dream, Yami told him that he would be joining the Black Bulls. Y/N deadpanned at the interaction. he sighed as he approached the captains after. Y/N looked up to see that all the captains had raised their hands. Y/N looked across the captains, 'Uh, they all chose me. That means I have to chose one. I really don't care. Well, definitely not the Black Bulls, Silver Eagles, Aqua Deer, or the Coral Peacocks. The Blue Rose Knights is probably a bad choice too.' Y/N continued to eye the captains when he made eye contact with Vangeance. The moment he did, his head began hurting. Y/N was surprised and felt a sense of danger coming from Vangeance. Y/N looked up to them, "I choose to join the Golden Dawn." Vangeance smiled softly while Y/N glared at him, 'I don't know what this fake goody-two shoes is up to, but it's no good.' Yami groaned, "Man, I was hoping to get someone to train with my sword too." Charlotte said, "I'm surprised that he didn't choose your squad Fuegoleon." Fuegoleon said, "He isn't fond of me, so its not really a surprise for me." Y/N walked with Yuno to the area where the were meet with Vangeance. Yuno said, "Guess this means that we'll be working together from now on." Y/N said, "For now."
