Chapter 17

I made sure to have a message sent to Tony and the others as soon as it could reach them, in the meantime Jarvis controlled the jet towards the HYDRA base as I typed into my computer which was linked to one of Tony’s multiple suits.

I was working on giving JARVIS full control of the body. I would enter the facility disguised as one of the soldiers whilst JARVIS was on standby, trying to find the others as we travelled around.

“The suit is ready Miss Greene”

“Brill” I muttered, setting the laptop down as I moved to the closet, which was actually a fancy suit making machine with a much fancier name that I couldn’t remember.

The team had used it dozens of times for missions, and it was strange being here, using all the stuff they usually did.

I put on the perfect replica and did my hair up, shoving a hat onto my head. I sighed, looking at myself in the mirror.

I really hoped I could get the others out of here, in one piece.

A shiver ran down my spine as I prepared for landing, unhooking everything, and putting on my new and improved glasses, they would give Jarvis the full view.

“Be careful, Miss Greene”

“Just make sure you have my back Jarv” I uttered before stepping out of the jet, clipping on my ID and making my way towards the entrance, merging in behind a fleet of cars, my heart racing the whole time as I tried not to look around too vigorously. I didn’t want to seem suspicious.

I followed my little group of people inside, Jarvis actively translating their speech into text before my eyes.

"How long do you think they will last?"

"Which one?"

The two men in front of me snickered and I tried to keep my face stoic.

"My money is on the soldier, that is if they can shape his brain after he’s been put back in the blender."

"I’m surprised there’s anything left at this point."

Bucky.

I had to find him before they put him in the chair, I didn’t stand a chance against him.

In a non-offensive way.

But he was a super soldier, and I wasn’t.

“What's the easiest route to the solider? I have orders to observe and report.”

They looked at me, eyes narrowing, and I almost forgot to breathe, hoping my German was enough to cover my ass.

"You do not know the way?"

I played bashful, ducking my head in mock embarrassment.

“I have been shown the way before, but my memory is not the best with all these halls…they are so alike” they muttered in agreement, and I seemed to have gotten away with it.

They gave me directions down a set of halls to reach Bucky, or The Solider as they called him, I thanked them and headed off.

Leaving them with a hail HYDRA and a salute.

I cringed under my skin as I did so, turning and keeping a steady pace as I marched away. Jarvis kept me on the right path, and I mentally thanked Tony for making such a brilliant AI.

Maybe it would be a good idea to get a weapon or something.

I pushed the glasses further up my nose, discretely pushing a little button on the side which realised a tiny drone the size of a money spider, allowing Jarvis to have his own eyes.

“Anything useful I can use?” I whispered as I scratched the side of my face.

He guided me silently down another hall until we reached an armoury.

"ID?"

I handed the big man at the door my badge and he scanned it before wordlessly passing me a pistol and a knife.

Well, that was easy.

I took my ID badge with another forced Hail Hydra and went on my way, back towards Bucky.

Thank God Nat had given me some basic training after last time.

I could hear the screaming before I even got to the room, my blood running cold as I picked up the pace.

I didn’t realise I was hovering my hand over my gun until another woman approached me.

"It is only The Solider. Relax." She instructed, tapping at my hand and I nodded, swallowing forcefully as she moved on.

Fuckers.

Rage burned within me, and I bit my tongue until I tasted blood. How dare they.

How. Dare. They.

I moved towards the room, two guards outside watching me approach.

“I have clearance to observe and report The Soldier” I almost spat the words as I showed them my badge, they observed it, looking back at me.

“Leia Potter?” I nodded and they let me inside, opening the door for me.

I entered a circular room, people in lab coats littered around and in the centre, Bucky.

Strapped in a chair like an animal, a piece of cloth wedges in his mouth as he strained against the restraints.

It tore at my heart to see him like this.

"Hey you! What are you doing here?"

A scientist approached and I punched her in the face, aiming my gun at the remaining two before they could move.

“Free him” I ordered, moving past the unconscious woman and towards the other two.

“FREE HIM!” I yelled, cocking the gun when they didn’t move.

"You can’t save them."

“Go to hell” I shot one of them in the leg and the other hurried to press the controls to release James, who’s screams died down to heavy pants.

I knocked them both out and used some handcuffs to cuff them all of them together before rushing over to Bucky, holstering my gun.

“Buck?” I pressed a hand to his face gently, feeling him flinch against my skin, eyes peeling open before I was knocked to the ground, Bucky’s metal hand around my throat as he yelled.

I gasped out in shock, grabbing at his arm as I tried to get air into me. I couldn’t talk, seeing his eyes hazy and unfocused.

“Steve” I wheezed out desperately, feeling the pressure building in my body.

His grip loosened and I kicked him away from me, dragging in deep breaths as I stumbled to my feet, grabbing my fallen glasses, and shoving them onto my face.

James continued to pant softly, shaking his head as his hands turned to fists.

“Alexandrite?” his eyes met mine, gaze flickering across me

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry” he begged, and I crouched next to him, putting a gentle hand on his back.

“It’s okay, you’re okay.” I helped him stand, my throat throbbing but I pushed past it “how’s your head?”

“I’ll get it back. He seems like he’s in a vengeful mood”

I couldn’t help but feel concerned as shook himself out of the haze, blinking.

“oh, shit you’re nose” he grabbed a towel from a shelf and pressed it to my face, guilt swimming in his eyes.

“it’s okay, Buck” I reassured softly, wiping away the blood “we need to find the others, you have any idea where they-“

Jarvis projected the little drone’s feed onto the glasses, and it took me a minute to realise what I was looking at.

It looked there were people on the floor, tied up to what looked like chairs or the wall?

“Alex? What is it?” I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes as I shakily covered my mouth with my hands.

“they’ve got everyone…oh my god”

Jarvis projected the map into my glasses, and I inhaled harshly, resting my hands on my knees. I could feel the nausea rising in me and Bucky rubbed my back as I threw up.

“Easy, easy. Here, let me see” he pried the glasses from me and looked through them as I wiped my face, tears stinging my eyes.

“Okay, I know where that is. I have an idea about how to get us there undetected, you ready?”

I nodded.

“Yeah, yeah I’m ready. What’s the plan?”

We exited the room, the soldiers, instantly raising their weapons at Bucky’s stoic stance and I scowled.

“Put your guns down. We have direct orders” I barked, and they did so immediately, letting us move on, neither of us flinching as we kept our poker faces on.

Bucky opened every door for me without question as he had instructed for me to let him do, because that’s what The Soldier was trained to do.

We got some looks, and I could feel the beads of sweat on my back as we got nearer to the room where the Avengers were bringing kept.

I still couldn’t believe that they had captured both teams.

My heart felt like it could burst out of my chest at any minute at the thought of them in the state they were in.

"Soldier!"

We both froze at the call, and I turned to see the woman from earlier approaching.

"What is he doing out of the recalibration centre?"

“I have instructions to return him to his cell” her head tilted as she stared at us both, studying us.

"Who instructed you?"

“Doctor Kivetsky” Thank God Jarvis had picked up on their name tags.

She hummed, joining us on our walk and I cursed mentally.

"I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before Miss Potter. Are you new?"

“It’s my third week, ma’am”

"I need to stop at the medical centre, Soldier continues to your cell. Miss Potter, with me."

I shared a brief glance with Bucky before he walked away, leaving me with the weird woman who guided me away.

She didn’t speak as we entered another area with scientists, leaving me by the door as she went to discuss something quietly with a lab coat.

I knew I was on dangerous grounds now; Jarvis had stopped broadcasting the bug to me and I was going in blind.

"Miss Potter, we need a third pair of eyes."

She beckoned and I stepped forward, peering at the screen.

“Cells?” I asked uncertainly, having watched Tony and Bruce enough to recognise them.

"Your cells, specifically. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you Miss Greene."

I couldn’t breathe, backing up quickly as she shoved a needle into my arm.

Holy shit. I pulled out my gun, pointing it at her.

“What was that?” she smiled wickedly, the lab coat behind her watching me expectedly as I began to sway.

“pancakes” I gasped out as I fell to my knees “bring in the pancakes”

“aw” the woman cooed at me, forcing me to look at her as my vision began to fade.

"I had no idea the drugs would make you this loopy, nighty-night little lady."

I dropped like a lead balloon and my vision went black.
