Chapter 16

Days passed and it got to the point where I began to clean everything I could, the anxiety of not being able to know if they were okay eating away at me.

May rang me a few times, to check I was okay, and I even popped over to have lunch with her. It did help me relax a bit and made me remember that I wasn’t completely alone.

“Yeah everything’s fine”

I reassured my mum over the phone, the device sandwiched between my shoulder and ear as I scrubbed at one of the countertops, “just keeping myself busy”

“they’ll be fine, Alex. You know they’re more than capable of looking after each other.” I sighed, resting my arms against the counter, she was right.

“I know, I know.” A little blinking light caught my attention, and I moved over to the TV, the map Jarvis had put up showing a little red dot.

“Hey mum, I’ll ring you back later okay? Love you”

I didn’t give her time to reply before hanging up.

“Jarvis what is that?”

“It seems that one of the Avengers has activated their location device” my chest felt tight, and I chewed on my finger.

“So, they’re in trouble? Requesting backup?”

“That is one possibility, another is that they are simply letting you know they are safe and allowing you to monitor any progress” he suggested optimistically, and slightly more logically.

“Has Tony said anything?”

“Mr. Stark is currently offline with the FRIDAY assisting”

Great.

“Would you like to access recent security feed from their last known position?”

“You can do that? Yes!” I rubbed my temple “why didn’t you start with that?”

The screen changed to show a very shitty feed of a street, it was in black and white, and I could just about see Steve with a baseball hat talking on a payphone.

I tilted my head as I tried to make sense of what was happening, I thought Jarvis was showing me Tony’s last known position but this works.

I hoped this was all a part of some elaborate rouse, that Nat was sat nearby with a coffee or Clint was watching through some binoculars or something.

I saw Steve’s head snap towards an oncoming van and the screen went black as a flash of light exploded across it.

I stood staring at it for a while, unsure of what I had just watched.

“Which team went where?”

“Captain Rogers and members are in Morocco and Mr. Stark and members are in Norway”

“Do we have any way of contact? Or location for the other team?”

“Communication is unavailable currently”

Shit.

“Which team alerted their location?”

“I believe it was Captain Rogers team, seeing as the tracker is located in Morocco.”

“Okay, let’s get a drone going, see if we can get some visuals”

I moved down to the lab, using one of the headsets to control a drone from a local satellite and having Jarvis help me locate the team.

We flew over a dense patch of forest, my eyes scanning every inch of the place as we neared the trackers’ location, not seeing a person in sight.

“Where are you guys?” I muttered to myself.

Jarvis lowered us closer to the ground and we stopped moving, hovering under the tree line.

“We have reached our destination”

“There isn’t anyone here? So where is the tracker coming from?”

“It seems the device is located on the side of a nearby tree” he manoeuvred the drone until I could see the small black, blinking light stuck to the side of it.

Dread rose in me as I wondered why they had to stick it somewhere.

“Any buildings around?” My fears were confirmed as we came across a big building, definitely old.

There were people, guards around everywhere and we didn’t risk getting much closer. We didn’t want to expose that we were looking.

The screen zoomed in on one of the uniforms, highlighting the red octopus.

HYDRA.

Motherfucker.

I took a deep exhale in, my leg bouncing as I told Jarvis to keep nearby. I took off the headset and began pacing.

We couldn’t reach Tony or any of the others and Steve’s lot had been captured, hopefully.

I assume the video feed we saw earlier showed when they were actually captured in the town, and they’d left the tracker as a form of breadcrumbs for us to find.
Now how was I going to get them out?

HYDRA is notorious for having well equipped bases… and crazy scientists.

But maybe I could help?

My eyes drifted over to the wall of Iron man suits. That could work.

“Jarvis, time to suit up”
