Sam

"Sam!", I heard my foster dad yell from downstairs, evident that he was drunk with his slurring. I was about to go downstairs when I hesitated for a moment, Charlie was out at school and would be home in a few hours, I wasn't at school today as it was an insect day. He always told me to stay in my room and far away from them.

"SAM", He yelled again, alot more angrily, which made me put my hands onto my hair and twirl it out of instict, as well as using my finger to write words onto my palm. I knew that I had to go downstairs but Charlie will also be angry at me.

I decided to go against Charlie. It was a smarter move in the long run as I knew he would come up here as a result of not going. I opened the big door to mine and Charlie's room, which was right at the top of the house, out beds on opposite sides of the room. He got me my space duvet that I wanted for months, while he had a bunch of football stuff up.

I had all my posters up with Albert Einstein, arguably the greatest mind in our history. I smiled at him for courage before slowly creeping downstairs, making sure to take my sidekick Arktos, a teddy bear I got from my real mommy. It was just a normal brown bear, which was pretty heavy and flopped about but he was pretty great as a best friend. I do know that it is an inanimate object and that it doesn't actually hear me, but it was nice to have.

Charlie said mother was a waste of space and didn't worth being called a mother, but I didn't understand why exactly as he never explained it properly. I normally was quiet by that point as he put his headphones in to drown me out, I know he means well though. He normally takes me to the museum every weekend to see the space exhibition.

And I knew all the workers names and everything.

I got to the bottom of the stairs, and slowly walked into the living room. My foster dad was sat on the sofa watching a football game. He didn't notice me for a few moments before he burped and turned around. When he saw me he smiled a mean smile at me.

I knew the difference by now as the kids at school weren't very nice.

"Hey sweetheart, can you get daddy another beer for me?", He asked, tapping his finger on the musty couch impatiently. I just nodded at him without a smile and headed to the kitchen quickly. I opened the busted up fridge making  and pulled him out a big beer bottle. It was so heavy but I managed. I hauled it to the living room and gave it to him slowly.

He snatched it out of my hand and opened it quickly.

"Sit", He said , motioning to the sofa next to him, which was just as dirty and gross. Charlie always told me not to sit on them, that they were bad for me and would make me sick, but at the same time he didn't give me the correct variables onto what was occuring right now, therefore I had to ignore his rules for my own survival.

I made my way over and managed to climb up onto the sofa and put Arktos onto my lap, making sure he was comfortable. Foster dad kept his eyes onto the T.v. Charlie always said to refer to them as foster dad and foster mum to make sure I didn't get attached. I never did anyway, I knew the only person who had my back was Charlie and James.

James was my very best friend, he was also very annoying but he was the only kid who didn't call me names and was a foster kid himself, so we were always near eachother and went to the same schools.

"So how is school Sam", Foster dad asked suspicously. I angled my head at him for a second trying to figure out what was happening and why he was being so much nicer. I just nodded at him, I prefered not to talk to people I didn't like or smelled. Which he was both.

"Words sweetheart, common I haven't heard you speak once, can you even speak?", He asked with his head tilted, giving me evil eyes. They were confusing though, he was obviously trying to do something, maybe he is trying to find out if I could scream for help? Time for those rare moments to speak then.

"Yes", I said quickly and quietly, causing him to smile with his crooked teeth. I went to get of the sofa when he motioned for me to stay seated.

"Watch the game with me honey, Charlie will be home soon and I'm sure he would love to see us bonding", He said with a much bigger smirk, in which I just nodded and stared at the screen. These men were just running around after eachother, throwing eachother to ground sometimes and other they just cheer. This was boring me and he had turned onto another game.

We were watching for a few hours when the front door went, slamming as it did. I turned to the door to see Charlie staring at me with wide eyes, looking back and forth between the foster dad. He practically sprinted towards me as he put his arms under my armpits and pulled me up towards him as I wrapped me legs around his torse. He had a arm around my back to make sure I didn't fall.

Normally human contact is something I prefer to not do, infact I always detested it and normally screamed when other people touched me, but Charlie was okay I guess.

He grabbed my bear and gave it too me, well shoved it to me. He also had his school bag on so it was hard for him to carry me and my bear but he still did. He gave the foster dad a glare as he carried me up the stairs towards the attack. When we got there, he threw his bag down onto the floor and put me down gently onto the floor.

He grabbed me by both shoulder and crouched down so he was at my eye level. He was looking me all over checking for injury as I just looked at him in confusion, when he finished he looked me straight in the eye.

"Did he hurt you?", He asked concerned but it was obvious that he was trying to keep his anger inside. He always had this tell when he was really angry and right now he was without a doubt angry at me. I shook my head at him and clung onto Arktos in my arms. He sighed in anger and grabbed Arktos out of hands. I went to protest but he gave me a look in which I just slumped down in defeat.

He then put Arktos right at the top of the wardrobe so I couldn't reach him and got some school books out of his bag as I just watched him. He sat down onto the floor and started to fumble through his bag, most likely looking for a pen. When he finally got it he started to write furiously in his.

I'll leave him be to calm down a little bit, I didn't understand why he was so angry with me? Is it because I broke his rules?

I looked around the room for a chair for a moment before I noticed it in the corner hidden behind some boxes. I walked over and started to move the boxes one by one. Charlie ignored me as I did, but that because he was mad. I managed to move all the boxes out of way after a long time, before dragging the chair over to the wardrobe and sitting on it, waiting for him to go to the bathroom for a second.

He was working for a few hours as I just stared at him as he did. He was doing physics and he was mostly wrong, but apparently people don't like it when you correct them on stuff like that. I was watching him before he stood up and walked past me, heading straight for the bathroom.

I quickly jumped up onto the large chair, taking my chance durimg this small window of time. I managed to jump up high enough to grab Arktos by his leg and pulled him down, catching him in my arms. By this time it was half 5 and time for dinner. Charlie normally brought me something home from school but he was angry with me right now and I didn't want to upset him further.

I managed to put my P,j on all by myself before grabbing Ark and hopping into bed. I knew it was pretty early but I would rather stare at the ceiling day dreaming about Issac Newton and his laws of objects in motion. Charlie was gone for an awful long time, it had been about half an hour at this point.

I creeped out of bed, my nightgown trapping along the floor as I went. I managed to get to the door at end, and opened it slowly. I had Arktos in my hands to make sure I was alright but I wasn't a child and I knew it wasn't real, but if I knew he was there to keep me safe, I don't have to be afraid.

I sat there for a second just to see if the bathroom door was shut. I managed to balance over the edge so the door was in sight, which after a little bit of moving I saw that it was wide open. Did he just leave me? I sat there numb for a second going through all the scenarios in my head onto what would happen if he left.

No more Museum trips?

I jumped back into bed and clutched Arktos close to me to keep me warm as I waited and waited for him to come home. I was closing my eyes, ready to welcome sleep and the theory of relativity in my brain, given the fact I had just read a book about it from the library, when the door opened, letting the strong smell of Mcdonalds fill the room.

I looked at the clock on the wall to see it was 7 at night, way to late to be eating. Charlie didn't say a word to me as he unpacked the food. He always got a big mac and got me a happy meal. He pulled the meal out of the bag and put in onto the desk in the corner, making sure to face the toy in my direction.

He got his out and started to eat, sitting on his bed staring at me, thinking about something.

"Sam, I'm sorry for getting angry at you", He said after a while. I nodded without saying a word which implied that I was angry with him for putting my bear up the top of the wardrobe. He looked at Ark then back at the wardrobe then the chair, in which he put him food onto his bed and strolled over to me pretty quickly.

I wasn't afraid of him though, he is only trying to protect me I guess. He pulled me out of bed and onto his lap, making sure that he was staring at me straight in the eyes.

"Do you know how worried I was when I walked in today? To find you sat with him?", He said calmly, making me know that he was alot more angry than he seemed. I shook my head and clung onto Ark harder.

"Please don't do that again Sammy, I told you not to go near him, let alone sit and watch football with him, do you understand me?", He said with a very stern voice. I just nodded at him once more and he sighed, motioning for words.

"Yes Charlie, I understand", I said nonchantly, in which he nodded and put me back onto the bed. I just sat for a second before he brought over my food, eating his chips as he went. He looked at Ark and shook his head.

"You could of hurt yourself Sam, I put it up there as a punishment for going against the rules, next time I'll throw him out. Now eat your food", He said harshly, but I knew it was because he was worried about me. I shook my head at him and got under the covers. He sighed deeply and I could hear him walking towards me.

He stood for a moment next to my bed, before he grabbed me by the leg and threw my over his shoulder, spinning as he did. I giggled uncontrollably as he walked me over to his bed and put me down with a loud thump. He grabbed my food and put it onto my lap.

"Please eat Sam, I know you haven't eaten anything else today as you haven't been at school, so eat", He said with a smile, sitting down next to me and getting his physics books out. I opened my meal and ate it very slowly, only managing a few chicken nuggets and some chips.

"So, care to tell me what I did wrong?", He asked me, motioning to his physics book. I just shrugged and kept eating, playing with the small toy that came with it. He just shook his head at me and finished the last of his food.

"Alright my queen, time for bed time", He said to me with a smile. I just nodded at him and gave him the rest of my food, as I made my way over to my bed. I got in quickly, letting the warmth surround me, as Charlie came and tucked me in, giving me a kiss on the forehead as he did.

"Night Sam, it's friday today remember?", He said with a knowing grin. I nodded enthusiastically as he laughed. He gave me one more kiss on the cheek and headed over to his bed. He normally stayed up alot later as he studied.

I closed my eyes ready for the wonderful museum tommorow.
