                Chapter 4

Evan POV:

I smiled happily when the movie was over. God, that was the worst movie ever. This is the last time I let Lisa and Ellie drag me to another one of their chick flicks. Judging from the looks I was getting, Scott and Kevin agreed. Spencer was right to have backed out of this one. Lisa and Ellie sighed as they got up, their faces alight.

“Wasn’t that just beautiful? Just amazing.” Lisa said breathlessly.

“Yeah, amazingly boring and stupid. Worst two hours of my life.” Scott muttered. Ellie shot her brother a look, and then walked in front of us chatting with Lisa. To be fair, “Love’s First Kiss” was definitely not a guy’s movie. Who would want to sit there and watch two people fall in love? Not me. I knew that one day I would find my mate, but I was just hoping that day would be in a long time. As much as I want to have a mate, I’m only nineteen. I don’t want to be strapped down for the rest of my life. I may be a werewolf, but I’m still a guy. I still want to party and chase girls.

Exiting the theater, I took a deep breath, glad to be back. California was great, but it wasn’t home.          One of the best things about California is my roommate. He is my age and was raised by a family that is close to my dad, meaning he was a were as well. It definitely made me sneaking out for runs in the middle of the night a lot easier to explain. As we were ending our freshman year, and I was heading back to Marksgrove, he got word that his family was moving to Marksgrove and that he was welcome to come along too. Man, we were so excited. It’s not every day that your best friend moves to your hometown. I am so pumped to introduce him to my boys tonight at the BBQ. He’ll fit right in, I just know it.

“So those two hours of torture counted as quality brother and sister time, right?” Scott asked. I laughed, leaning forward. Man, it was cold outside. Scott and Spencer chuckled as well as both the girls. I took another breath, noticing something in the air. It was sweet and smelled like strawberries with vanilla. I’ve never smelled it before, and it was intoxicating. I swiveled my head around, looking for the source. It wasn’t Lisa or Ellie. I would have smelled it on them during the movie. The source seemed to be coming from a little clothing shop across the street. Along with the scent, a magnetic pull seemed to be coming from there. It was like there was something, or someone in there that was pulling me towards that shop. For some reason, my usually mature wolf was begging me to go in there. I was just about to tell him to shove it when Ellie spoke and started walking towards that very store with the strange, sweet scent and alluring pull. We all followed suit behind her as she walked across the abandoned street. Most days there were more people out but after that last storm whipped through our small town, I guess more people decided to stay inside since it looked like another rager was on its way.

“I just have to grab a quick present for Leah. I totally forgot to do it yesterday, and with that BBQ tonight I won’t have time to get it.” Ellie said, pulling the door open. As soon as I walked in the smell hit me like a wall. It was strawberries and vanilla and werewolf and rain and bacon and so many other things. I gaped, but quickly closed my mouth and followed Scott to the back of the store. Since no one else said anything about the scent, I’d keep it to myself. I didn’t want anyone to think I was crazy or something. I looked around discreetly. There was no one else around in the store except the sales associate, who didn’t look up from the young, blond girl she was talking to and on the other side of the store I could just barely make out the form of someone who was standing behind a rack. The smell was everywhere, making it hard to tell where it was coming from.

“Is it me, or is there a strange smell in here?” I asked broke. I had to know if I was going crazy or if it really did smell different.  Lisa sniffed and then shrugged.

““Well, yeah. It smells like a werewolf, but what’s new about that. Actually, hold on,” She said, sniffing again. She frowned slightly and curiosity was evident on her face. “I don’t recognize the scent. And I know how everyone smells.” She finished. I glanced around once more, the blond and the sales associate were still talking and the girl behind the rack had moved. I looked around for her, suddenly anxious to see her. Something in my gut told me it was her. She was the girl that smelled like heaven and had such a pull on me. I finally saw her again, but just barely. I could only see the very top of her head and a small part of the side of her arm. Her back was turned and she seemed to be inspecting whatever was on the table in front of her.

“Do you think one of the new ones is here? I’m so psyched to go to their BBQ tonight. I hear they have a daughter our age and she’s bangin’.” Scott said. Same old Scott, always looking for the next girl.  I chuckled quietly, knowing who he was talking about. Jason, my best friend from college, had always talked about the girl he grew up, fondly calling her his sister. The way he talked to her on the phone, and how he constantly worried about her made me believe that this girl truly was a little sister to him. He also made it very clear that his baby sister was strictly off limits. While I’d never actually seen a picture of her, the only one he had of her he kept in his wallet and never showed to anyone, the way he described her, she definitely sounded hot. But he was my best friend and I would respect his wishes.

“Dog.” Lisa said to Scott, laughing slightly. The five of us, and Lisa’s mate Spencer, had all grown up together, so we were used to Scott’s profuse sexual attitude. As we all laughed quietly at her comment, we heard the audible sound of a sigh. To any human, it would have been impossible to hear. Thanks to werewolf hearing though, we rarely missed anything. Hangovers were worse with our overly sensitive hearing. We all stopped laughing and quickly turned to the girl who had sighed.

It was the girl who had been behind the rack but now was over by a table. She happened to have found the two places in the entire store that I couldn’t see clearly. I was frustrated, bot being able to see what she looked like. I was certain now that she was the source of the scent and the pull. She stiffened, feeling five pairs of eyes on her back. Sniffing the air quietly, I confirmed that she indeed was a werewolf, though I didn’t recognize her. Suddenly, the bond who had been talking to the clerk walked up to her and said something. I didn’t catch what she said, my attention was on the girl. I could see the back of her head and the profile of her face as she turned to talk to the blond. She had long dark brown that flowed down in soft waves, and curled lightly half way down her back.

I watched as she put her hand on the blonds arm and pulled her towards the door. I took an involuntary step forward, not wanting her to leave for some strange reason. I oddly felt attracted to this girl even though I’d yet to see her face. But seeing as how she was a werewolf that I didn’t recognize and from Jason’s description, I was 99.9% sure this was his little sister. Sutton Collins. Such a pretty name I thought. Before I could process another thought, Lisa and Ellie were flying across the store and stopping gracefully in front of a startled Sutton. Lisa and Ellie both smiled at her and she  tentatively smiled back. I assumed they were introducing themselves, but I wasn’t really paying attention. I was again, transfixed by the scent she gave off and the way her wavy hair moved softly every time she moved her head. The blond standing next to her noticed my stare and looked me over curiously. I suddenly remember Jason saying something about Sutton having a little sister. So this must be her. They look nothing alike from what I could tell. Oddly enough, Jason could never shut up about Sutton, but he rarely spoke of her little sister. When he did however, he always got this strange look on his face. Like he was envious of something.

My attention was brought back to Sutton, as was her sister’s, when all three girls laughed at something. Sutton had such a magical, inviting laugh. I wasn’t so sure I’d be able to respect Jason’s wishes tonight at the BBQ. I had to at least talk to her and figure out why I had such a strong attraction to this beautiful stranger. I could feel Kevin and Scott staring at me, staring at her. Scott nudged my arm and I looked at him.

You ok? He mouthed. I nodded and turned back to watch as the blond exited out the door and Sutton was right behind her until she turned to look back. She opened her mouth like she was going to ask a question then caught sight of me. And froze.

This was the first time I had seen her head on and my god she was beautiful. Thick black lashed framed sparkling green eyes and her pale skin was common for werewolves, but somehow she just seemed to glow. She was tall and lean, also common for a werewolf, and her peachy lips pulled up into a smile, revealing to me pearly white teeth. She was radiant.

It was then that I noticed I had been smiling goofily at her. Oh man, she must think I’m some moron on a dork. My mind came up with hundreds of bad things she could be thinking. I had the sudden thought to look perfect for her. Did I have popcorn in my teeth? Were there any stains on my clothes. I realized then, that I held her rapt attention just as much as she held mine. I was pretty sure if a meteor hit Earth and there were fires everywhere and people were running around and screamin, the two of us would never know it. It was like I was drowning in her gaze, I couldn’t get enough of it. If I could just stand and stare at her all day, every day, for the rest of my life I’d be happy. I was about to take a step towards her, when a blaringly loud ring interrupted my thoughts.

My phone rang a second time and Sutton’s expression changed from awe to confusion. I frowned slightly and she took that moment of release from my gaze to quickly turn and practically run out of the store. I watched her go, my wolf howling at me to go after her. Realization hit me like a ton of bricks. I had found my mate. The love of my life. The one person I would care the most about. The person who came above and before anyone else. I smiled a huge smile, glad it was her. Wait.

Oh. Shit. Sutton Collins is my mate. Sutton is Jason’s little sister. Jason  is so going to kill me.
