Empty

A joke jumbled up like lines of a script

The punch line ready to fire.

But the door flies open and I'm tumbling inside

Abounding with my soul in a fire.

The edge of a line on the tip of my tongue

But the words die bitterly in my mouth

Shriveling up in the ends of your memory.

As your bed lies empty in the room

An unforgotten memory played on a loop.

Like a broken record skipping tunes

For laughter will never fill this empty room

That we use to lie in for hours,

Cold dark hands grabbing my heart

Knees giving out beneath me

And the waves crash in a pounding rush.

All the breath that was in me gets released

The wrenching sobs in lonely nights

Flood my mind in a river of time.

I barely gaze upon the sight

And turn out the door.

My eyes linger on an empty bed

And unread books covered in dust

With one last glance, I look around

Hands tremble,

I turn the lock

Closing your memory with the door
